Be it known that I, VV'ILLIAM BUNTIrio, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Lavatory-Fittings,of which the following isa specification.
In the construction shown in my prior Patent #682,453, wherein a pair o valves is arranged to close oppositely disposed ports in a valve-casing, by means of concentric stems arranged inia discharge casing 'which is mounted in the slab of ,the
lavatory, I have found that, after the fittings were installed, the valve stems were frequently bound together so that they discharge casing is connected to the lavacould not be operated independently.
It is necessary, in constructin a fitting valve of the above type, to provide one or more couplings between the point where the tory slab and the point where it is con Iiected to the supply pipes, and, as the upper portion of the valve operating mechanism has abearing above this joint and the lower portion has a bearing below it, it follows that if the relative positions of these portions of the casing are changed, the operation of said mechanism is likely to be interfered with. I
I have ascertained that displacement of the casing sections sufliciently to interfere with the operation of the valve mechanism has frequently been caused by unequal strains which have been placed thereon in connecting the water-supply pipes to the inlet ports of the fitting. For example, if the supply-pipe at one side is too short while thatat the other side is too long, when the coupling nuts were screwed up, so as to make the joints tight, the lower portion of the valve casing will be sprung sidewise, and, as the upper portion is held in a vertical position by the slab or lavatory, the result will be that the casing will be bent at some intermediate point, usually at the union joint, so that the operation of the valve mechanism will be prevented or otherwise interfered with. This tendency to strain the valve casing is usually greatly increased by having the supply-pipes connected to the casing at different points, as shown in my said patent, and in case the connection with the lavatory is loose, the relative strain on the casing caused by the two pipe connections may be suflicient to distort the casing suiiiciently to cause the d fficulty above referred to.

The fitting shown in the drawing is subr stantially the same as that shown in my said prior patent, except in the particulars hereinafter referred to, and comprises the discharge casing a, which is adapted to be rigidly mounted in the slab b of the lav atory, and has an inlet casing a connected to its lower end, by a union or other form of coupling. Said casing a is provided with valve chambers 0 at opposite sides, the ports leading therefrom to the main part of the casing being controlled by a pair of valves, one of which is indicated at d, and said valves being controlled by handles d, as described in my said prior patent.
According to my invention, instead of connecting the supply pipes directly to the valve chambers c in line with the inlet ports thereof, as in my said prior patent, I
provide a cap 6 for closing the end of each chamber c,. through which access to the valves may be had, and connect an elbow 7 to the under side of each valve chamber 0, each elbow being preferably formed integrally with the casing to and extending downwardly and laterally therefrom, as shown. A nipple g is preferably connected to thefend of each elbow f and each nipple is respectively connected, by a coupling elbow h, to the supply-pipe z. The casing 0 is made of slightly flexible metal, but the portions 0 thereof which connect the chambers 0 with the main ortion, and also the casing a and the couplings which connect it to casing c are much more rigid than the elbows f, so that, when an upward or downward strain is placed on the end of either elbow f, the elbow will yield either upwardly or downwardly, as the case may be, preyenting'a strain from being placed on the other portions of casing c, or on casing a, and its connections, which would prevent the satisfactory operation. of the valve mechanism.- For example, if one supply pipe was too long and the other too short, when the parts were screwed together the corresponding elbows f would be sprung up and down respectively, from their normal positions as indicated in the dotted positions in the drawing.

A lavatory fitting comprising a discharge casing adapted to be rigidly mounted in the lavatory and having an inlet casing rigidly connected thereto, said inlet casing having a valve chamber and an inlet elbow connected to the under side of said chamher, said elbow extending downwardly and laterally therefrom and being constructed to yield vertically with relation to said casing, and end of said elbow substantially as described.-
2. A lavatory titting comprising a casing having a pair of oppositely disposedvalve chambers, an inlet elbow connected to the under side'of each chamber and extending downwardly and laterally therefrom, each elbow being constructed to yield vertically with relation to said casing, and a supplypipe connection for the end of each elbow substantially as described.
