INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1913. Serial No. 801,095.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines and the object of the invention is to provide a means whereby the explosive mixture used in such engines is more uniformly and thoroughly mixed; and it consists essentially of a deflecting wing secured to and forming the top of the piston and provided at its center with an outwardly extending wedge shaped projection the apex of which is opposite the orifice of the intake pipe of the carbureter as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure l, is a sectional elevation of the cylinder and piston. Fig. 2, is a sectional plan of the cylinder and piston.
Like letters of reference refer tolike parts in the several drawings.
A is the cylinder having the usual water jacket A. V
A is the piston with the connecting rod A attached thereto. p
A is a wing formed on the top face A of the piston A at any desired distance from the periphery of the piston.
A is a wedge shaped projection of the wing A B is an external pump or carbureter by means of which the hydrocarbon fluid is sprayed into the cylinder A through the discharge pipe B, which passes through the cylinder walls and is exactly opposite the apex of the wedge projection A when the piston A is at the extreme inward stroke.
' A is the air inlet bypass connected with the inlet port opening A The stream of hydrocarbon fluid as it is sprayed into the cylinder A impinges on the apex of the wedge shaped projection A is thereby divided and deflected on the opposite sides of the wedge piece A 7 The curved faces of the wedge shaped piece A gives the fluid a whirling motion and this fluid meeting the inflowing air in the inlet port opening A mixes with the air and carries the mixture so formed upwardly with a whirling motion and forming a complete mixture.
From this description it will be seen that I have devised a simple device whereby a thorough mixture of hydrocarbon fluid and air is brought about.
What I claim as my invention is. 1. In an internal combustion engine, the
Patented Sept. 15, 1914.
combination with the cylinder provided with w an inlet port'through which the fuel is designed to be received of a piston having a wing extending across the top face, a projection extending from the wing opposite the inlet port of the cylinder whereby the incoming stream of fuel is deflected with a swirling motion toward each side of the cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the cylinder provided with an inlet port through which the fuel is designed to be received, of a piston having a wing extending across the top face, a wedge shaped projection extending from the wing, the apex of the projection being opposite the inlet port of the cylinder whereby the inflowing stream of fuel is divided and dirooted to flow upwardly toward each side of the cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In an internal combustion engine, the combination with the cylinder provided with an inlet port through which the fuel is designed to be received, of a piston having a wing extending across the top face, a wedge shape projection having curved sides extending from the wing, the apex of the projection being opposite the inlet port of the cylinder whereby the inflowing stream of fluid is divided to flow upwardly with a whirling motion toward each side of the cylinder, as and for the purpose specified.
