Be it known that I, Josnru MARTiNi, a citizen of the United States of America, and.

a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in' Attachments for Lithographing-Printing-Press Rollers, of

which the following is a full, clear,.and ex act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. a

My invention relates to an attachment for taking .up the slack in coverings applied to printing press rollers, and it has for its object to provide a simple and efiicient means whereby the slack of such coverings may be quickly removed from time to time when it occurs therein.

It is common practice at the present time to place upon printing press inking rollers a covering or envelop of leather, or its equivalent; and, in the use of such coverin s, it is necessary to remove accumulations o ink therefrom from time to time. The cleaning of the roller coverings is accomplished by scraping the covering longitudinally of the roller, and the operations of thiskind result in the stretching of the covering to such degree as to produce slack therein, which must be removed to retain the covering in proper shape upon the roller. Heretofore roller coverings of' the kind referred to have been placed upon the rollers and their ends have con contracted at the ends of the rollers and drawn tightly thereat by means of lacing, and it has been necessary to-tighten the lacing from time to time as the covering. became slackened. By my invention I dis pense with the necessity of adjusting the lacing in the contracted ends of the covering.

In the preferred form of my invention, the take up ring is adjusted by a screw sleeve 2, which 1s loosely mounted on the neck C of the roller, and is screw threadedexte'rnally, so that it engages internal screw threads in the take up ring 1. The sleeve 2 abuts at its inner end against the body of the roller, the latter forming an abutment to which the sleeve is rotatably fitted. The sleeve extends through the take-up ring and is provided at its outer end with awrench head 3, adapted to receive a suitable wrench by which the sleeve is manipulated. The sleeve 2 is preferably made in segments, in order that it may be readily applied to the neck of the roller, and its segments are provided with tongues 4' and notches 5, which interlock with each other to hold the segments against longitudinal displacement relative to each other when they are assembled upon the neck of the roller and in position within the take up ring 1.

It will be understood that whenever the screw sleeve 2 is rotated on the neck of the roller, it will turn within the take up ring 1, which is frictionally engaged with the contracted end of the covering E, and said ring will be caused to travel away from the adjacent end of the roller body, and as it thus moves, the covering is drawn in a longitudinal direction, and any slack present therein is removed.

. In the modified form of my device-shown in Fig. III the neck C is provided with screw threads'and a screw sleeve 7 is screwed onto said neck. The screw sleeve 7 extends through the'take up ring 1' and is formed with a flange 8 engaging the inner face of the take up rin L The covering F is laced over the outer ace of'the take up ring and thelatter may be adjusted to tighten the covering by turning the screw sleeve 7, thereby moving the sleeve and take up ring away from the end of the roller; I claim 1. A roller of the character described abutment adjacent to said neck, a sleeve surrounding said neck and rotatably fitted to said' abutment, said sleeve being rovided with external screw threads, a traveling take up device screwed onto said sleeve, and a covering or said roller having one of its ends secured to said traveling take up device, the said sleeve being operable against said abutment so as'to movethc traveling take up device away from the -body of the roller.

A roller of the character described having a body and a neck extending froman end of said body, a screw sleeve rotatably mounted on said neck, a take up ring surrounding the inner end portion of said screw sleeve, a covering for the bodyof the roller having one of its ends contracted and laced over the outer face of said take up ring,

said screw sleeve being extended through the take up ring and provided with a'wrench receiving member near its outer end.
