- WILLIAM G GGINS, or PHILADELPHIA, rnmvsYLvAmA.
SHOE-REST.
Original application filed August 8, 1913,
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GAcGINs, a citizen of the United States, residlng at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia,
which the followin is a full, clear, act description, re erenoe being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved shoe rest adapted for use in the polishing of shoes.
In such a device, whether the shoe is pol ished by means of a brush or cloth; or by a cloth cooperating with guides, as in an application filed by me August 8,1913, Serial No.-783,665; it is important that the shoe should not slip off the rest and that the rest should be capable of being turned at any angle to its support so as to allow the brush or cloth to be brought into frictional contact with ever part of the surface of the shoe that is to be polished, while at the same time the shoe will be maintained in fixed relation with the rest.
The more specific object of my invention is. to provide a foot rest meeting these requirements.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shoe rest; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The base plate or support a is intended to be secured, preferably by screws, to any suitable platform. Projecting upward from the base is a hollow support or pocket 7) whose side wall at its upper end curves inward toward a central opening in the top of the pocket. This aflords a convex spherical-shaped surface for the support of a cup 0 whose inner or lower surface is of concave spherical shape so as to suitably engage the pocket I). Secured to and depending from the center of the cup 0 is a rivet d to the lower end of which is secured a plate 6 which is within the pocket I) and having a peripheral flange engaging the inner surface of said pocket. The cup 0 depends from a plate 1 constituting the foot rest proper. The flanged plate 6 is preferably of thin metal so as to have a degree of elasticity.
Specification of Letters Patent.

support'thatpart of the shoe extending in front ofthe heel. Around the outer margin ofithe platethe same is flanged at 9, upwardly, the upper edge of the flangeprojecting above the level of the top of the adjacent part of the plate Between the flange 9 and the bodyof the plate f is a groove h. This groove is wider at its rear end than along the remainder of its length,
and'the flange is sov curved as to'form guides ifor a cloth which may be passed under the rear of t e shoe plate and its opposite ends brought upward over'the guides 2' and in sliding contact with the shank or instep ortion of the shoe.
When the shoe is placed on the shoe plate 7, the upper edge of the flange g engages the sole of the foot so firmly that, with the slight downward pressure which will naturally be applied by the user, there will be no tendency for the shoe to slip upon the shoe plate. The supporting means described virtually act as a universal joint and enable the foot to assume any desired angle so that the position of the foot may be altered from time to time without altering the position of the shoe relatively to the shoe plate. Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A shoe rest comprising a hollow suport having a rounded outer surface, a plate or supporting the shoe, and a cup and a flanged plate depending from the shoe plate,
said cup having a rounded inner surface slidable upon the rounded outer surface of the support, and said flanged plate extending within the hollow support and adapted to engage the latters inner surface.
- 2. A shoe rest comprising a hollow support open at the top and having a rounded outer surface adjacent to the top, a plate for supporting the shoe, a cup depending from the shoe plate having a rounded inner surface resting upon the rounded outer surface of the support, and a member within the hollow support connected with the shoe plate through the open top of the hollow support 2nd adapted to engage the latters inner surace.
3. A shoe rest comprising a hollow support, a plate for supportin the shoe, a cup depending from the shoe p ate, said cup located outside the hollow support and mov- The 'shoe plate f is adapted to directlyable relatively thereto, a plate Withinthe, hollow support connected. with. the shoe plate, said inner plate being elastic and flanged to contact with the inner surface of the hollow support.
4. A shoe rest comprising a hollow s t 1p port open at the top and having a rounded contour adjacent to the top, a plate for supporting the shoe, a cup depending from the shoe having a rounded inner surface slida-blyresting upon the rounded outer surface of E 5. A shoe rest comprising a support hav ing a part-thereof presenting a spherically plate for supporting the: shoe, and means depending from the plate.
curved surface,; a
having a part thereof presenting a spherically. curved surface conforming to the spherically curved surface of the support and arranged to have a limited sliding movement thereupon in every direction.
6. A shoe rest comprising a support hav ing an'open top and spherically curved inner and outer surfaces beneath such opening, a plate'for supporting the shoe, and means depending from the plate having parts thereof conforming respectively to the spherically curved inner and outer surfaces'of the support and adapted to slide thereupon.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, on
this tenth day of October, 1918. WILLIAM. H. GAGGINS,
