Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1914.
Application filed November 12, 1933. Serial No. 800,625.
' specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a novel rail chair upon which the confronting ends of rails can be mounted whereby the rails can not become vertically or laterally displaced.
Another object of this invention is to pro 'vide a chair with a detachable center piece that can be used as a spacer block between the ends of rails, particularly inthe winter time when the rails are contracted.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive rail chair that can be easily and quickly installed without the use of skilled labor.
With the above and other objects in View the invention'resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a side elevation ofa rail joint in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the rail joint.
A railchair in accordance with this invention comprises a tie plate 1 having the longitudinal edges thereof notched, as at 2 whereby spikes or other fastening means can be employed for securing the tie plate to a tie or other support. Formed integral with the tie plate 1 are longitudinal parallel splice bars 3 and ladapted to brace the sides of rails 5 placed in thechair, said splice bars preventing vertical and lateral displacement of said rails. Arranged intermediate the ends of the splice bars is a center pieceo that conforms in cross section to the shape of a rail and therefore represents a rail section.
This rail section is used as a spacing block and isretained 1n the chalr by a screw 7 that extends through an opening 8 1n the splice b'ar4, through the rail section 6 and into the splice bar 3, said screw being tapped in the rail section 6 and the splice bar 3, with the head of said screw countersunk in a recess 9 provided therefor in the splice bar 4:;
- One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible of such variations and modifications as 'fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A rail chair comprising atie plate having bars upon said tie plate and serving functionally as a spacer block, said rail being d1sposed 1n said chair with a base engaging the inner face thereof, and a screw extending through one of said splice bars and tapped into said rail section and the other of said splice bars for detachably holding said rail section in position. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM RAROHA.
