CHARLES L. ELLIOTT, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 118, 19341..
Application filed J anuary 24, 1913. Serial No. 743,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. EL-Lro'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and use ful Improvement in Internal-Combustion Engines, and declare. the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art 1o to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
.My invention relates to internal combustion engines and the object of my improve-' ments is to provide an improved valve apparatus for such an engine. I accomplish this object in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1, is an elevation mostly in section of the upper part of-a cylinder of an internal combustion engine bowing the valves of my invention adjusted thereto. Fig. 2, is an elevation of an engine with the apparatus embodying my invention adjusted thereto.
a is the cylinder of an internal combus-' tion engine.
I) is a passage extending laterally from the combustion chamber of the cylinder a.
0 and (Z are port-s through opposite walls of the passage 6 at the outer end thereof.
9 and r are cylindrical openings formed in an extension from the wall of the cyl inder (1.
e and f are cylindrical valves fitting in the openings-r and g. The ports 0 and at open through the wall of the openings 9 and r and diametrically opposite the ports 0 and d are the ports 9 and h opening through the walls of said openings and extending over a greater angle of the circular cross section of said openings than do the ports 0 and d.
i and j are diametral passages or slots cut through the cylindrical valves 6 and f. These slots are so arranged that their outer ends shall be in full register'with the ports g and h when their inner ends commence to register with the ports 0 and a, and the innor ends of said slots shall pass by the openings c and a so as to be out of register therewith, before the outer ends of said slots have passed the ports g and h.
s and t (Fig. 2) are sprocket Wheels respectively upon the axes of the valves 6 and f.
7c is a sprocket chain extending around and engaging the sprocket wheels 8 and t.
' m is a sprocket wheel secured to the valve 6 concentric with said valve. (it) 1 0 is the main shaft of the engine and p is a sprocket wheel thereon.
a is a sprocket chain extending around and engaging the sprocket wheels m and p.
The valves 6 and f have their axes extending transversely to the passage 6 and are located opposite each other and upon opposite sides of said passage.
a? is the exhaust and 3 ,is the intake passage. The ports 9 and open into the passages a and 1 The operation of the above described device is as follows: lVhen the engine is in motion, the turning of the shaft 0 rotates the valve 6 through the sprocket wheel p, chain a, and sprocket wheel at and the rotation of the valve 0 causes a corresponding rotation of the valve 7' through the sprocket gearing 70, s, t. The arrangement of the valves 6 and. f should be such as to secure the various cycles to the operation of the engine.
hat I claim is:
1. In an engine, the combination of a cylinder provided with a single passage leading therefrom, two cylindrical valves having diametral slotstherethrough, an intake passage adjacent to one of said valves and an exhaust passage adjacent to the other of said valves, said slots being adapted to form communications between said passage and the adjacent intake and exhaust passage respectively, said valves being arranged opposite each other and upon opposite sides of the passage from the cylinder.
2. In an engine, the combination of a cylinder provided with a passage leading therefrom and with two cylindrical openings and having a port communicating between each .of said cylindrical openings and said pasv sage, and a second po'rt through the wall of inner ends are open at all substantially as" each of said openings covering a greater are and for the purpose descrihed. 10 of cross section of said wall than the corre- ]In testimony whereof, I sign this specifisponding first named port, a cylindrical cation in the presence of two witnesses valve in each of said openings having a slot CHARLES L. ELLIOTT.
- therethrough the ends of said slot'being ar Witnesses ranged to register with'said ports, so that AGNES M. HLPKINS, their outer ends shall be fully open when the ELLIOI'I. J STODDARD.
Qopiea of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Goinmisuionen' or Eetents. Washington, D. C.
