Application filed October Q2, 1913. Serial lilo. 7%,5'25.
v T 0 (ZZZ 207mm it may concern 3e it. known that l, OTTO ll'ionssnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Electric-Current Indicator, of which the following is a specification. I
lhe object of my invention is to provide a current indicator which can be readily con nected into an electric circuit, such as that leading from an electric lamp socket or plug, receptacle to electric energy consuming devices like electric fiat iron heaters, etc., and when so'connected will indicate that the electric current is flowing to the device so that when the latter is not in use it may not be left connected and become overheated and thereby create a fire hazard, and also waste .the energy.
lVith this object in view, my invention consists in a device having the features of an ordinary attachment plug, or receptacle and combining with these features a small electric lamp in such a way as to form a compact structure which can be used safely and conveniently by the average person My invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing and it is understood that the details of construction can he varied without affecting the spirit of the invention, so that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sec tion of an electric current indicator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section on line m-:v Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on line 2 i Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of a connection detached from Fig. 1. The remaining figures represent side elevations and a section of other embodiments of the invention.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a plug which is composed of the body 2 of insulating material and the inclosing metallic shell 3 which is adapted to be screwed to a lamp socket or receptacle. 1n the outer end of said plug is the metallic contact 'tip l extending from which in said body is the metallic conductor 5, the inner end of which is connected with the main link 6, which is on the under side of the body 2, and adjacent to the connector link 7, which is sup ported on the collar 8 of insulating material below said body 2, and connected with the link 6 by the screw 9.
Within the collar 8 is secured the screw' shell .10 to which is fittedthe head of the electric light lamp It, said head being provided with the tip 12 which is adapted to form an electric contact with the tip 13, the latter being on an end of the connector 14, which is attached to the link 7 1n the body 8 is the connector 15 which joins the shell 10 and is attached by the screw 16 with'the link 17, the latter having its upper portion extending from the top shell 8 through the body 2 and then along h the side of the collar 8 and below the same,
its lower end having the flange 18 which by means of the screw '19 is connected with the socket 20 below the same. The link 7 has an extension 21 angularly downward therefrom, the lower end thereof having a flange 22, which by means of the screw 23 is connected with the socket 20, the head of said screw which is on the underside of the top of said socket 20 forming the contact tip 24.
Within said socket is the screw shell 25 which is secured to the same by the screw 19, said shell being adapted to receive the plug '26 which is provided with a. tip 27, which may be placed in electric contact with the tip 24 in said collar 20, said plug having wires 28 which may extend to an electric heated sad iron or other electric energy consuming device.
Surrounding the lamp 11, the body or collar 8. and the links 6, 7, 21 and 17 is the cylinder 29 of transparent insulating material as an inclosure and protector and guard for said members. 7
It will be seen that the electric current from the source of supply energizes the lampl1, and also passes to the place of consumption, in the present case, the sad iron above referred to, the lamp thus indicating that the current is flowing to said iron, thus preventing fires which are caused by the iron being left connected and overheated.
vwhen the current should have belen cut-off frbm the iron.
In Fig. 5 the top body 6 is provided with a key or other snap switch 30 for evident purposes, and the bottom socket can be of the form shown in Fig. 1, or any of the forms shown in Figs. 9 to 12 inclusive.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8, the top bodies 32 are provided with difi'erent forms of contact fingers 33 which are proportioned to fit receptacles now on the market.
In Fig. 9, I show a cap '31 which is attached to the bottom of the links 17, 21 and is in mechanical and electrical-connection therewith, it carrying the wires 28 which lead to the electric energy consuming device.
Figs. 10 to 12 inclusive show difiere'nt forms of bottom socket ends which can be used in place of those shown in Figs. 1 and 9.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character stated, means for connection to contacts of an electric supply-circuit, conductors from said means, means for connecting the lines of an implement-actuating circuit to said c0n' ductors, and an electric lamp in constant shunt connection with said conductors.
2. In a device of the'character stated, a frame having means at one end for detach- 1,1o4,440 V V ably connecting it to a coupling of an electric supply-circuit and having contacts and having at its other end means for connecting the lines of an implement-actuating circuit, conductors in said frame and connected to said contacts and connecting means, and an electric lamp in constant shunt-connection with said conductors.
3. In a device of the character stated, a plughaving contacts adapted to contact with contacts of an electric supply-circuit, a transparent cylinder secured at one end to said plug, a body secured to the other end of said cylinder and having a plug-socket,
OTTO MOESSNER.
