specifica ono L tte Paten Application filediJTuly 24,.1913u, Serial No. 780,878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN MIHALYAK, a subject of the King of Hungary, residingat Bitumen, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Guards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail guards and has for its object to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth which is adapted to be arranged in proximity to the rails of a track to arrest lateral movement of the wheels of a car whereby the wheels will be maintained upon the track rails.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a rail guard which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, eflicient in its use, readily positioned with respect to the rails of a track and inexpensive to-manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-F igure 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the arrangement of a plurality of nail guards, in accordance with this invention, showing the adaptation thereof in connection with a railway track; Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan, broken away, showing the adaptation of the rail guard with respect to a railway track. Fig. 3 is a section on line X-X of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation, broken away, of the rail guard.
Referring to the drawing in detail 5 denotes the ties of a railway track upon which is secured the track rails 6, 7. Mounted upon the ties 5 and between the rails 6, 7, as well as being secured to the ties 5 are longitudinally extending plates 8, 9 formed of any suitable material, preferably wood and which abut against the inner sides of the bases of the track rails 6, 7 and constitute means for maintaining the tread flange of a wheel upon the headof the track rail.
Secured to the ties 5 at the outer sides of the rails 6, 7 are longitudinally extending supporting members 10 and 11, upon each of which is mounted a guard rail 12 having, curved ends 13. The guard rails 12 extend from one end to the other of the supporting members 11 and the said guard rails are oppositely disposed with respect to each other.
The guard rails 12 are secured to the members 10 by headed bolts 14- and'nuts 15. The heads 16 of the bolts 14 are countersunk in the top of the rails 12.
The guard rails 12, owing to the supporting members 10, 11 are arranged above the heads of the track rails, and said guard rails provide means to prevent lateral movement P tentedsl 1113. 1 19 14- of the wheels of a car, under such conditions preventing the wheels from jumping clear of the track. The intermediate portions of the guard rails 12 are out of alinement with the inner longitudinal edges 17 of the members 10, 11.
What I claim is 1. A rail guard comprising stationary spaced supporting plates adapted to be fixed to the ties of the track and abutting against the bases of the track rails, being of the the intermediate portions of said guard rails being spaced from the inner longitudinal edges of said members.
2. A rail guard comprising a pair of stationary spaced supporting plates adapted to be fixed to the ties between the track rails and abutting against the bases of said rails, being of the same height thereof, supporting members secured to the ties exteriorly of the track railsand being of the same height as guafd rails being spaced from 'the'inner 10nthesaid track rails and abutting against, the gitudinal edges of said members. 1%;
