'Application nieuwe 25, i913. serial m7753265 This moldconsists of an inner form' in an 'outer shell the latter comprising a Hat sideb.
The collapsible form consists of a resilient.'l
sheet-metal shell c reinforced by twogseries of substantially quadrantal spaced angle irons al, one series being located at the top and the otherV at the bottom of the shell. An angle iron e is secur'ed along one of the straight ed geportions "of the shell and its attached `iiange extends out lbeyond such .ledge l and overlaps the other straight edge of the shell, vthis angle iron serving principally as a means of attachment'for the collapsing mechanism ofthe form as will be presentl shown. i.
In order to cause my form to collapse ef-v fectively without bucklingI cause it to.. as-A sumea substantially spiral shape when bein collapsed,l and it istobe noted that the initial action is a direct inward or, radial movement ofoiie edge o suificientextent to free it from the other Vedge just-before the spiral shape is assumed. -To this end I employ a longitudinal movable bar Vf connected to the shell c by two series of radial lenear the topf and bottom of the form. Each any required number of levers, for purpose of illustration however I have shown'ivelevers for eachscrie's. .They are `indicated at lc, l, m, n, and 0 and are connected tothe angle iron e l andM angle-irons p and p to and reinforcing the angle iron p being mounted adja-A cent to the other straight edge of the shell, the levers o being connected to angle iron e-and levers l.: mentioned. These levers arearranged inpar'ticular vertical and horizontal angular positions as. ollows; 'the vertiopl angular osition-beingrst considered and the form eing assumed to be with The arm k is'jpivoted to the bar j b'elowfthev horizontal lanejof its pivotal connection to the shell, -t bar at apoint on andthe-angles of e arm -l being connected to the the same'horizontal plane,l
the remaining levers increasing progressively to the lever 0 which has the greatest inclination to the' horizontal. The horizontal angles between these levers, viewedv in plan, are such thatpthe vertical movement of the barl will cause the form to `be displaced inward by 4substantially regular increment between cepting k and 0 which as above mentioned 'of these series may comprise the shell, *Y
to'angle iron p last ,I
its' axis vert1cal. I
-all adjoining leversexiA l vof 'these abutting edges when the core is to be collapsed the angle of the lever m to the bar f is made Inot less than that ,of the lever.
f: to the bar. As these levers are on .opposite sides of the bar, the initial longitudinal l0 outward displacement of the angle ironp and the portion ofthe shell te' which it is; connc'cted,'while the lever m tends to draw its portion ofthe shell inwardly. -The result nected is momentarily held Stationary while the bar is displaced laterally in a diametrical direction away from this edge. Simul- A taneously the lever o owing to thecemponent of the two forces due to -its greater inclination and the displacement of -the bar,`
draws the edge'to which the lever o is connected sharply away from the held edge. Following' this action, as thebar continues to be moved, 'the decreasing angles of the several .levers relatively to the bar causes the shell to be displaced inward with substantially uniform increment as abovemen- 'tioned. 1
'30 The spigot and socket forms rand s respectively are preferably east-ings of the cross section shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4 and 5.v
The spigot formv is furnished with handles t consisting preferably of pieces of pipe with flattened endsfor'attachment to the form.
The outer member of the mold is prefer-` ably made of -sheet met-al and in two parts 2 A and Llthelatter being formed with the lat side b,'befor e mentioned, and flanges b b; while the 'part 2 is of semicylindrical form and haslanges b2- to4 engage and be bolted to thelianges b. l
To use my improvedmold for casting culvert or drain pipe sections and the like, the sooket, member is bolted to a base bs upon which the core and -shell 2 4 stand. The core is placed within the socketform s' and vthe shell inclosing it, the lparts 2 and 4 of thelatter being bolted together and the core expanded. The space between the core and shell is'\then illed=` with concrete or other s/uitablema'terial and the spigot member 'is y,/set in place. After the material has v'set the.
,f spigot member is removed, the core collapsed Y. and withdrawn vertically, theI parts of the shell unbolte-d and removed'.4 The cast article is'then ready for use.
-"Wha t I claim is as follwszf 1.. 'I he combination with a form whereby 'so Ahollow members are cast Such form having rabuttingstraight edge portions and such lform presenting-when in use an unbroken molding surface, of means for releasing the 'movcment of the'latter will tend to oausean is that the edge to which'the lever k is con? ,ing of sheet metal havin Asame' from the cast membercomprising devices yfor relatively dlsplacmg the saldedges in both radial rand tangentialdirections, and for converting -the shell .into substantially spiral form.A
e' 2. In combination with aform whereby l hollow members are eas such form consist# butting Straight edges and adapted for relative latcraldis- 1 placement and means for effecting suchdisplacement-comprising a bar disposed inthe approximate axial line of the form, @leverspivotally connected to the interior;- of the form adjacent to one of such edges and pivotally 'connected at theiropposite ends to the b ar at a point incline from the pivotal connection tothe form' and other levers pivotallyjconnected'contiguonsly. to the other l edge of the form and at their opposite ends to the bar such' last mentioned Slevers being Vinclined relatively to the first mentioned levers.
4. Inl combination with a ,form whereby hollow 'members arecast such form consisting of sheet met-al having abutting` straight edges and adapted for relative lateral displacement and means for effecting such dis-l placement comprising a rod disposed in the y' approximate axial line of the form, levers -pivotally comeeted to the interior of the form adjacent to one of such edges and pivotally connected at their opposite ends to the bar at a point inclined from the pivotal conneet-ion tothe form, and other levers pivotally connected contiguously to the other edge`v of the form' and at their opposite ends to the bar such last mentioned levers being inclined relatively to the 'lirst mentioned levers, and'additional levers pivotally connected to the` interior of the form in. dierentposit-ions and pivotally connected at' their opposite ends -to the bar, these last mentioned levers f having regularly Vapproximately increasing inclination for. the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I' have signed my name to thisl specification in the presence of two witnesses.
