To all whoml it may concern Beit known that I, AUGUST J. KREpzKnMP, a citizen' of the- United States, residing at' Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wire mattresses, the object of the invention being .to provide an improved wire or spring mattress so constructed that the spreading of the stuffed mattresses will be prevented either sidewise or endwise so that the Same will be maintained in its box-like form at all times.

In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing one form of structure with which this improvement may be used, to-wit, a divan with one of the sections forming a back and therefore in the form of a sofa bed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the structure in the form of a double bed; Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the structure folded in readiness for shipping or storing; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one corner of .the structure.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding` parts throughout the' drawings.

The divan with which this improved wire mattress is used comprises a pair of sections 2 and 3 hinged together so that one section, as 3, may be level with the other to form a double bed or raised to form a back or folded over upon the section 2 to permit the same to be readily stored or shipped. rEach of these sections comprises, in the preferred embodiment thereof shown, a pair of cross angle bars 4, each consist-ing of a horizontal member 5 for the reception of the usual helical springs (3 to which the usual spring mattress or metallic fabric 7 is attached, and an upright member 8. These cross angle members arc supported by suitable brackets 9 spaced and maintained apart by suitable side bars 10, which latter carry folding legs 11. In the forme shown each of the legs, which may be made of tubing and provided with a suitable foot or caster, is provided at its upper end with a cast-ing 12 to which the leg is rigidly secured. transversely located sleeve 14 encircling and loosely mounted on the side bar. The transversely located sleeve is provided with a pair of spaced projections or brackets 15 and 16, each provided with a slot 17 for the reception of a headed bolt 1S. Each of these brackets in the present instance is shown as a single member adapted to engage or overlap at the side a correspondingly formed projection or bracket 19 carried by a sleeve 2O bolted ,to the side bar. This last bracket or projection is preferably provided with a bolt opening 21, while the brackets 15 and 1G are provided with open-ended slots thereby to permit the leg to be shifted into overlapping engagement with the bracket 19 ca rrying the bolt. Thus, by this construction the leg may be located at any desired point along the side bar, while the bracket 19 may also be swung laterally so as to bring it into proper position to permit the leg bracket to be clamped thereto with the leg in a proper perpendicular position.

rhen it is desired to clamp each leg in its vertical supporting position, the leg is shifted toward the bracket 19 so that one of the legbrac-kets, as 15, will project past the bracket 19, overlapping the same at the side thereof, whereupon, by turning up the wing nut 22 on the bolt, the leg will be readily clamped in such position. lVhen it is desired to fold the leg under the mattress the wing nut is released, the leg shifted inward or away from the bracket 19 ,andv swung upward and then shifted back to bring its other projection 16 at the side of the projection 19, and the wing nut then retightened, whereupon the leg will be held in its folded position. Thus, in the present structure all of the legs can be folded under the metallic mattress in a manner which will be readily understood, so that the structure Acan be readily shipped 'or stored away in a small space.

The sect-ion 3 of the divan is hinged in any suitable manner to the rear side of the seat section 2 and is provided with foldable legs supported in a similar manner to those ijust described, so that these legs can likeing the legs the structure is in a compactthe legs a double bed is formed. 0n raising it to a perpendicular position and folding the legs a divamwith a back is formed. On throwing forward the back and resting it horizontally over the seat section and fold- .form ready to be shipped or stored away in a comparatively small space.

Carried along ythe outer edge of the seat section and the outer edge of the back section is a suitable side guard 25 for preventing the spreading of the mattress, thereby to maintain it in its box-like form. This side guard may be formed in any desired manner, but in the present instance it is formed of a metallic fabric connected by helical springs with the upright member 8 of. thecross angle bar, so that, it will be observed that the stuti'ed mattress is inclosed not only at its sides but-also at its ends, at itssides by means of the metallic fabric side guards and at its ends` by the cross angle bars, so that the stuffed mattress will not protrude or fall over either the sides or the ends of the structure and will at all .times be maintained in its box-like form.

The side guards are usually of slightly less height than the height of the stuffed mattress, so that when the structure is shipped with the stuffed mattresses in positionthe side guards will be held somewhat spaced apart, but 4when shipped or stored without such stuHed mattress one side guard will overlap somewhat the other. The guards are preferably attached at intervals to the bottom in any suitable manner.

,From the foregoing it will be observed that when the divan is in the form of a sofa bed, with its back in an upright position, the upper edge of the stuffed mattress is confined by the side guard located at this point, while the opposite edge of the mattress is conned by the side guard located along the outer edge of the seat section, and that the same is true when the structure is in the form of a double bed, or when the sections are folded one on top of the other.

ln the present embodiment it will be observed that the two sections are substantially duplicates one of the other so that either one of them may be raised to form the back. l

From the foregoing it will be Observed that the upwardly extending portions 8 of the end angle bars, together with the side guards extending upwardly above the fabric f bottom or mattress body 7, form a pocket for the soft vor stuffed mattress when the structure is in the form of a bed structure as in Fig. 2, or when in the form'ofa divan as in Fig. l, since each section 2 and 3 has,

the upwardly extending end portions 8 and side guard, so that in either form of the device the soft or stuffed mattress is prevented fromshifting or spreading laterally in any direction and this is also 4the case when the structure is made as an ordinary one-piece wire mattress.

I claim as my invention:

A wire mattress embodying a supporting frame and a mattress body attached at its ends to the sides of the end bars of said frame and extended upwardly at its side edges to forni in conjunction with said end bars a pocket to receive a stuffed mattress therein and to retain the same against shifting or spreading laterally in any direction.
