proved vWall Construction, of which the'fol-f and exact descriptlon lowing is a full, clear,
My invention relates to concrete wall construction, and objects of the invention are to construct a concrete wall having a degree of elasticity not less than that of brick walls, no cracks extending through the wall can be produced.
lin my improved construction separate and distinct blocks are molded n stu in successive layers, to break j'oint as in walls built of with the blocks, metallic joint members, preferably of sheet metal are employed and molded in place in the molding of the successive layers of the blocks, there being horizontal and vertical joint members co-extensive with the adjacent surfaces of the blocks at the joints. The joint 'members form part of the mold and are so shaped as to cause interlocking of adjacent blocks.
The invention will be particularly explained in the specil'ic description following. j .s
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings Aforming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. l
Figure lis a longitudinal vertical section of a section of wall embodying my invention together with the exterior mold members,
' the section being taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is atransverse vertical section, the section being taken on the' line 2--2 of Fig. 1 ,Fig 3 isa perspective view of a portion of one of the horizontal joint elements.; and Fig. 4 is a'perspective view of one of the lvertical'joint elements.
.In producing a wall in accordance with my invention a mold is formed to permit the pouring and molding, of the material to i. form the bottom or the first layer of blocks 10. rlhe outer members of the mold consist of sides 11 formed, -i'n practice, of planks or the like. Before pouring the concrete for forming the blocks 10, vertical joint members 15 are so disposed as to separate the blocks and to form transverse members of the mold, said vertical joint members having lateral flanges 16 which are nailed to the .tom edges respectively, yIn connection inner Yfaces of the sides-11 of the mold. The material having been joint members 12 are laid are fastened to the inner faces of `the sides Ill-of the mold through the medium of vertical flanges -14 on the said ljoint members, suitable nails `being driven through the flanges into the sides 11. The horizontal joint members 12 are formed with longitudinal concavo-convexribs 13 to form grooves in the blocks at the under side of the said members. The said ribs will also form longitudinal tongues on the under side of the next layer of blocks. The vertical joint members 15 are formed, on the'. top and botwith depressions 17 and lugs 18 corresponding with the ribs 13 so that the-horizontal oint vmembers 12 may take a rm seat on the vertical members 15. The first layer of blocks having been thus Vcompleted with their horizontal and vertical joint members 12 and 15, the next upper series of vertical members .15 are secured to the inner faces of the sides 11 of the mold through the medium ofthe lateral flanges 16, said vertical joint members being disposed intermediate the lower series of vertical joint members so that the second layer of blocks 10 will break joint with those below. The material for the second series of blocks is nowpoured and at the proper time the next horizontal joint members 12 are laid on top of the blocks and fastened to the sides 11 of the mold. The forming of successive blocks will thus produce longitudinal tongues 19 on blocks of one layer and corresponding and alined grooves 20 in the opposite faces of the blocks. Thus the joint members and the blocks will'be interlocked with one another and the blocks will be separately formed. The wall now having been completed to the proper height the sides 11 of the moldy are removed and-preferably the flanges 14; and 16 of the joint members are stripped or cut oif leaving the joint members co-extensive with the adjacent faces of adjacent blocks.` 'A plaster coat is laid on the faces of the wall and the joints may have the usual markings 'after the manner of brickwork or other block work. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and ydesire to secure by Letters Patent: i
l. A concrete wall composed of blocks, and joint elements'in vertical and horizontal joints, said joint elements being co-'expoured horizontallv on the blocks and tensive with the adjacentr surfaces of the blocks, the horizontal joint elements having concavo-convex ribs, the blocks having tongues and grooves corresponding to the i' said ribsfand the vertical joint elements having at the top and bottom edges, respectively, recesses and lugs corresponding with the said ribs.
' 2. A concrete Wall composed of separate blocks Amolded n situ, horizontal and vertical joint members substantially co-extensive with the adjacent surfaces of the blocks and
