Description

J. R. LON G.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING ARM AND BOXING FOR DISKS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 8, 1913.
Patented June 16,191L
H y ll UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. Lone, or niaonn, OKLAHOMA.
ADJUSTABLE SUPPORTING-ARM. AND BOXING FOB, DISKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN R. LONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Apache, in the county of Caddo and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Supporting Arms and Boxings for Disks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable supporting arms and boxings for disks to be used in connection with cultivators or the like.
One object of this invention is the pro vision of an arm such as described, which will support the boxing in the rear of the disk, in such position and at such angle that the sand or loose earth will be prevented from working into the boxing.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a supporting arm for disks which holds the boxing in the rear of the disk and in such position that the earth, weeds or the like will be thrown away therefrom, consequently preventing the same from clogging between the said axle box and disk.
Another object of this invention is the provision of an arm and boxing such as described which will support a disk so it can be very readily and quickly adjusted to any desired angle, and which can be turned beneath the said arm to throw the earth either to or from the row.
Still another object of this invention is the provision of an adjustable connection between the arm and boxing, by means of which the spindle can be raised to any angle and by means of which the grease cup will be held so that the same will be forced through the boxing, manifestly keeping it oiled at all times, and tending to force anyforeign substance which might enter the boxing therefrom.
A further object of this invention is the provision of an arm and boxing such as described, which is so constructed and positioned that it will take all of the strain from Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 8, 1913.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Serial No. 783,686.
With the above and other objects in view this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the boxing.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by similar characters of reference, through out the several views, the numeral 5 designates generally a portion of a cultivator frame, to which is secured an attaching clamp 6. An arm 7 is pivoted as at 8 to the forward end of the clamp, while the rear end of the said clamp is formed with a slotted segment 9, for receiving a bolt 10, which passes through the arm 7 and adjustably supports the latter in any desired position upon the clamp 6, relative to the bar 5.
The rear end of the bar or arm 7 is oflset as at 11 to produce a resultant standard 12, which supports an angular casting 13 consisting of the vertical plate 14 and the horizontal plate 15. The vertical plate 14 is pivoted at its lower end as at 16 to the standard 12 while the upper end thereof is formed with a slotted segment 17, which receives a bolt 18, which extends through the standard 12 and adjustably supports the casting 13 upon the said standard.
A circular enlargement 19 is formed upon the free end of the plate 15 and is serrated upon its lower face to engage the upper serrated face of the circular member 20. The upper face of this member 20 is beveled forwardly as at 21 so the underside thereof will be slanted upwardly as shown at 22 at an angle, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The forward portion of the underside of this member 20 is formed with a sleeve 23, which receives the spindle 24,
while formed at the rear of this sleeve is a pair of cars 25, which engage the said spindle, further holding the same against movement. An eye bolt 26 surrounds the spindle 24 and passes up through the members 19 and 20 and receives a nut 27, by
-means of which these members 19 and 20 can be held against any relative rotation.
A reduced extension 28 is formed upon the forward end of the sleeve 28, with its end 29 in contact with the rear end of the boxing 30 which is enlarged as at 31 to receive the said extension 28. The boxing is formed with an interior groove 32, which forms a circular recess for receiving grease or the like.
The boxing 30 is formed with a peripheral flange 33 to which the disk 34: is attached, while the forward end of the spindle 24 is formed with a head 35 which con tacts with the forward end of the boxing 30. A grease cup 36 is threaded upon the forward end of the boxing 30 and has a concaved inner end 37 for holding grease and an angular boss upon its outer end for en gagement with a wrench or the like, by means of which the same can be rotated.
From the foregoing disclosures take-n in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be manifest that an arm and boxing for disks is provided, which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
7 It should be understood in this connection that various minor changes in the specific details of construction can be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
In a device such as described, the combi nation with a supporting means, of a sleeve carried thereby, a reduced extension formed upon the forward end of the sleeve, the opening in said sleeve slanting upwardly toward the reduced extension, a spindle carried by the sleeve, and adjustable therein, a head formed upon the forward end of the spindle in advance of the reduced extension of the sleeve, a disk boxing upon the spindle, said boxing having a socket in one end thereof to receive the reduced extension of the sleeve, the opposite end of the boxing being in contact with the head of the spindle,
said boxing being further provided with i an interior groove, and a grease cup carried by the boxing, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. LONG. \Vitnesses JAMES S. PILxnNToN, RUBIE J. E. R. COLLINS.
