Description

Specification of Letters Patent. v Patnfed Julie 16, 1914.
Application mea May 1s, 1912. serial No. 698,231. f
T0 all whom it may concern.' y
Be it known that I, JAMES E. ELKrNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Needles, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Games, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to blocks employed in playing various games.
The primary object of the invention is the construction of a block having its faces provided with removable characters, each of the series of which being employed in playing a certain game.
I also aim to provide a block of this character having suitable pockets for the reception of members bearing certain characters which are required in playing a certain game.
With the above recited objects in view and others of a similar nature which will be more apparent as the nature of the invention is more fully disclosed, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts set Aforth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a block constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the plates having the indicating characters removed. Fig. 8 is a top plan view of a plurality of plates having the letters or characters which when attached to the blocks provide for the playing of one game. Fig. 4 shows a reverse view of one of the plates having characters whereby another game may be played.
The block l,` which is employed with my improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawing` as rectangular in form, but it is to be understood that the said block may be constructed in various forms and shapes, all of which, however, present any desired number of flattened faces. Furthermore, the blocks may be constructed of any desired or preferred'material, and the said block l has each of its six faces provided with pockets 2. Each of the said pockets is adapted to receive a plate 3,-and the said pockets are preferably of a depth to permit of the face of the said plate lying iiush with the face of the block. The plates are removably retained within the pockets in word anyl desired manner. lIn the showing of the drawing I have provided the plates with oppositely arranged perforations 4, the same being adapted for the reception of securing elements such as screws 5. By such an arrangement, it will be noted the series of plates bearing different characters may be inserted or removed from the pocket-s 2, and thus any number of games may be played with the employment of the block. In the .present instance the blocks are provided with plates bearingthe letters employed in the spelling of the word travel When one of the plates is inscribed with a complete Word, the remainder 'of the plates have only port-ions of the word. In playing this game the blocks employed are six in number, each one of which having a plate bearing the complete word travel u on one of its faces, while'the remaining aces of each of the blocks are provided with plates showing different parts of the word travel, and the word parts on each face of the blocks differing from the word parts onany other block, the latter being so arranged that the blocks may be rolled to bring their faces to match or 'to spell the complete word.
In playing the game the score is determined as follows: For instance, if the soV word travel appears upon the upper face of each of the six blocks the player will of course, score the highest number of points rfor which the game is played, while the rolling of the blocks bringing to the upper face of the blocks the next highest number of plates bearing the word travel or letters making up the highest number-of the said travel. will entitle the player to the next highest score and so on until the desired number of points played for istotaled by one of the players. l l Of course a different game maybe played by removing the plates to reverse the same and again inserting the said plates within the pockets, and furthermore it is to be fully understood that any number of plates bearing given characters whereby other games may be played may be employed as heretofore stated.
The game materially differentiates from the ordinary dice game by reason of the specifie arrangement of the letters on the rethus addingl lo the interest nf the gaine.
