GEORGE W. JOHNSTON, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
COMBINATION LIFE-SAVER AND SWIMMING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed September 18, 1915. Serial No. 51,465.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Life-Savers and Swimming Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to. provide a life saver and swimming device.
I accomplish my object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the wings and sleeve for attachment to the lower part of the limbs; Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same; Fig. 3 is a front view of a modification of the device attached to a foot; Fig. 4 is a front view of the same attached to the foot; Fig. 5 is an end View showing the position of the wings both open and closed; Fig. 6 is an end view of a leg wing forthe purpose of treading or walking in the water; Fig. 7 is aside view of the same; Fig. 8 is an assembly of all the parts of the life saver and swimming device on a person, excepting the head buoy, and Fig. 9 is the head rest.
Similar letters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several Views, A being a wing float, B B are sleeves for the lower parts of the limbs or ankles, O O are inflated air spaces in wings A A, and D D are stoppers rigidly attached to the top of the sleeves to prevent the wings passing the desired positions; they are also filled with air to assist in buoying.
E E are buckles and straps for fastening the device to the limbs, but, if preferred, clasps may be substituted.
F F are hinges for the wings.
A A, shown by dotted lines in Fig.v 5, indicate the position of wings A A on the return strokes.
H is a suitable tube with valve for inflation of head rest I, shown in Fig. 9.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the kind described the combination of an air inflated sleeve and hinged inflated wings thereon for the purpose of buoying and propelling a person through the water.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE W. JOHNSTON.
