2 SHEETS-SHEET 1.
EARL THOMPSON, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed November 23, 1915. Serial No. 62,936.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, EARL 'IHoMrsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Chair, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in chairs, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient study chair for use in schools, colleges, libraries and houses. I accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the device complete, Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, Fig. 3 is a view of the underside of thetablet, Fig. 1 is a view of an optional form of the tablet applied to the chair, Fig. 5 is a view of the supporting bracket, and Fig. 6 is a view of the optional form of tablet and bracket.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved device comprises a chair 1", provided with four supporting legs 2, 8, 4 and 5, and a pedestalleg 6. Below the seat of the chair 1 I provide a plurality. of drawers 7 and 8. The upper drawer 7 is adapted to be used for drawing instruments and material and the like and the lower drawer 8 which is preferably deeper'than the upperdrawer 7 is adapted to be used as a receptacle for books and the like.
7 One of the front legs 4: extends above the seat of the chair 1 and with the leg 6 forms apedestal for the tablet 9. Upon the said legs 4 and 6, I provide a rack 10 for books.
A tablet 9 is supported horizontally on the pedestal legs 4 and 6 by means of brackets 11 and 12, carrying the plates 13 and 14 which are preferably secured thereon by means of rivets 15, 15. On the underside of the tablet 9 I provide a plurality of friction plates 17 and 18 which are secured thereon by means of screws 19 or the like. The said tablet ,is rotatable upon a pivot bolt 20 carried by thetablet 9 and resting in a seat in the bracket member 13. On the underside of the tablet 9 I provide a plurality of studs 21,22, 23
resting in curved slots 24, 25 and 26 respectively formed in the plates 13 and M carried by the brackets 11 and 12. The brackets 11 and 12 are'preferably mounted onvertical runners 11, 12' respectively ready access and egress is provided by the" rotation of the tablet 9 on its pivot 20 whereby the tablet 9 may be swung or rotated to one side when it is desired to enter or leave the chair.
The tablet 9 may be provided with an ink well 30 and any other usual writing or drawing accessories.
The tablet 9 may be removed from the pedestal by removing the cap screws 29.
Where it is desired to tilt'or incline the tablet 9 I provide brackets having swivel joints 30, 31 whereby the tablet may .be inclined at any desired angle and secured in position by means of the cap screws 29, 29.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination in a chair, of a supple-- mental leg in advance of the front of the chair, said leg and the adjacent chair leg projecting above the seat of the chairto' form a pedestal, a tablet thereon, a bracket adapted to support the tablet, said tablet being pivotally mounted on the bracket, and means for adjusting the position of the tablet substantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination in a chair, of a pedestal formed of a chair leg and a supplemental leg in front of said chair leg and connected thereto, a tablet pivotally mounted thereon, a bracket supporting the tablet and having legs resting in the pedestal, and means for adjustably securing the legs to the pedestal substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination in a chair, of a edestal formed of a chairleg and a supp emental leg in front of said chair leg and connected thereto, a tablet thereon, a bracket supporting the tablet, plates on the tablet, a pivot between said bracket and a plate upon which the tabletv is adapted to rotate, a plate carried by, said bracket and interengaging means between the late on the bracket and the plate on the ta let to guide and hold said bracket and tablet in operative engagement as th tablet rotates.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination in a chair, of a pedestal formed of a chair leg and a supplemental leg in front of said chair leg and connected thereto, a tablet thereon, a plurality of angle members connected by a cross plate to form a bracket for supporting the tablet and means for adjustably securing said angle members to the legs forming the pedestal substantially as shown and described.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination in a chair, two legs projecting above the seat of the chair to form a pedestal, one of said legs being a supplemental leg in front of a chairlleg and connected thereto, a runner on each leg formin'g said pedestal, a tablet, right angled members connected by cross plates to form a bracket carried by said pedestal and sup porting the tablet, the angle members included in said bracket being adjustably mounted on said runners, plates on said meaaie tablet, plates carried by said bracket, and slidable inter-engaging means between the plates on the tablet and the plates on the bracket to guide and hold said tablet upon the bracket.
6.In a device of the character described the combination in a chair, of a pedestal formed by legs projecting above the side of the chair, a bracket removably carried by the pedestal and having a horizontal portion, a tablet p'ivotally mounted upon said bracket and adapted to swing in a horizon tal plane, and inter-locking means between the bracket and the tablet to guide the latter in its swinging movement and to hold the same in close relation to the bracket at all times.
