Description

' F. J. GAMMACHE.
FERRULE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 6.1915- Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
l N VE N TO R j M ZM WtTNESSES ii W UNITED STATES PATENT onnron.
FRANK JOSEPH GAMIVIAGHE, 0F LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA;
FERRULE.
Application filed July 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known, that I, FRANK Josnrn GAM- amor-m, a citizen of the United States, re-
' siding at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ferrules, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in portable socket handles, of the class which are used on pendant incandescent lamps, in which a ferrule formed with a threaded end, is attached to the handle and forms a part thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, durable and efficient means of securely fastening the ferrule to the handle, as the present means employed for that purpose is unsatisfactory in that the ferrule becomes loose or detached from the handle.
In socket handles heretofore used, great difficulty has been experienced in securing the ferrule to the handle and also the threaded nipple to the ferrule, except by expensive and complicated means. This fault is vercome in my construction as will be seen. and at the same time a stronger construction secured.
\Vith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed in the annexed specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application, and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views. But it is fully understood that while I have here described my invention as shown, that I do not confine myself to the exact design, as slight changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1, is a vertical side view of a socket handle with a ferrule attached thereto, and connected to a cap or upper portion of an incandescent lamp socket. Fig, 2, is a vertical sectional View Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Serial No. 38,387.
of the same, taken on the line A-A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a plan view of a ferrule with a threaded piece assembled as shown in Figs. 1, and 2. Fig, 1, is a perspective view of a ferrule and threaded nipple or bushing separate, before being assembled, as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings; the device comprises a. body portion or handle 10, of
insulating material with an axial hole extending longitudinally therethrough, to permit of the passage of an ordinary incandescent lamp cord.
In my preferred construction shown in *igs. l, 2, 3, and 4 the ferrule and threaded bushing or nipple is made in two parts 11, and 12. The ferrule 12, is provided with a flange or bottom 14, and the threaded bushing 11 is provided at one end with a neck forming a shoulder; said neck having slits forming prongs 13, and 15. The neck thus slitted is inserted into the center hole or passage of the flange 14, and every other one of the prongs 13, and 15, folded outwardly over the flange 1 1, clamping or securing the two parts together. Every other prong will thus project into the end of said handle 10, when the ferrule is placed thereon and form a locking member to prevent the ferrule from turning on the handle.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is As an article of manufacture, a ferrule for incandescent drop light sockets comprising in combination with a hollow handle, a ferrule comprising a tubular portion flanged, having an inner flange at one end, a threaded nipple having prongs or lugs formed on one end thereof, and adapted to be inserted in the flanged end of said tubular portion and retained therein by bending down or clamping two of said prongs upon FRANK JOSEPH GAMMACHE.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. G.
