WATER-HEATING AYARATUS.
specification of 'Leiters Patent.
Application tiled December 31, 1915. v Serial No. 69,656.
To all wimmz't may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. Gonsoo- LAND, a citizen lof the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact vdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
An object of this invention is to improve the construction of water heating apparaapplication for Letters Patent ot November 2, 1914, Serial No. 869,966, so that the same can be used by connecting the steam feed pipe with the interior of the heater by means of a pipe, by means of which the steam can enter the heater and mix with the water contained therein, and further providing the heater with an outlet, which communicates with the journal boxes for the car axle, whereby to eii'ect a cooling medium for the journal. A further object of this improvement is that, it may be employed as a re extinguisher to cars when desired, by removing the hose from the reel and training the nozzie upon any desired point of the car which mav be on fire. Y With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which the ligure is a view in elevation and partly in section of a water heating apparatus made in accordance with this invention.
Referring to the designates the water drawing, the numeral 1 tank and 2 is the pipe which leads ordinary lcold water into said tank. Leading from the tank 1 is a discharge pipe 3 which communicates with a water heater 4. The water heater 4 has a steam inlet pipe 5 with 'a valve 6, said pipe 5 leading into the heater 4 and connected up to a coil 7 extending from near the top to near the bottom of said heater, and terminating in a return pipe 8 which leads to the boiler of a locomotive. ln the heater 4 is a float 9 secured centrallyto a rod 10,

slide in the pipe 3, and the lower portionv t 12 of 'which is adapted to slide in a pipe 13 which leads to the toiletbowl 14. The top and bottom walls of the heater 4 are formed to provide valve seats 15 and '16 respectively. The portion 11 is provided at a point above the float 9. with a valve 17, and the'portion 12 is provided at a point below the float 9 with a valve 19.
.0n the end of the heater 4, a hot water pipe 20, having a vertical'pipe 21 and a l h ri-l zontal `pipe 22, leads up to a vertical ipe 23 to a' faucet 24 disposed above the wash bowl 25, `said faucet 24 being provided with a valve 26, The bowl 25 is provided with a waste pipe 27 which leads to the toilet boil r14. The pipe 13 is provided with a flushin valve 28. Steam may be admitted throug the coil 7 through the steam pipe 5 to heat the water which is discharged into the heater 4 through the pipe 3 leading. from the tank 1. N hen the water in the -heater 4 rises to a certain height, the float 9 will seat the valve 17 and unseat the valve 16, cutting oil' the supply of water to the heater and permitting the heated water to flowrto the bowl 14 by the' opening of the valve.l 28.4
vl/'heu the level of water in the container falls below a certain height, the float 9 will seat the valve lf3-and unseat the valve 17, permitting water to enterthe heater 4. The steam coil 7 will heat the Water and it may be used in the wash bowl 25 and for flushing the bowl 14.
