Be it known thatI, RAY E. DUNHAM, a citizen of the United States, resident of Berea, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Land-Rollers, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention'being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to land rollers and particularly to rollers in which water or sand is used as a ballast.
The object of the invention is to provide a roller construction in which the drum may be manufactured economically and in a water-tight manner, and in which at the samean axial section of a fragmentary portion of said drum, upon an enlarged scale.
The illustrated embodiment of my invention comprises an outer metal sheet bent to form a'cylindrical shell 1 and having its' meeting ends butt-welded in the usual man-- ner. In each-end of the shell respectively, is a head 2 formed with a central opening 3 and in these openings are secured in awa ter-tight manner, the ends, respectively, of a hollow central tube 4, preferably by welding. Each head is formed with an outwardly extending flange 5, these flanges fitting snugly within the interior of the shell, as shown. The end portions of the shell or cylinder, as well as the end portions of the flanges, are bent to form an inwardly extending rib 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the extremities of these end portions are integrally united by welding, thereby forming a water-tight joint. The bending is effected in a manner such as to roduce a smooth rounded end surface as at as a result of which these ends avoid marking or marring of the surface upon which the and end heads, strengthen roller is used, to a very large degree. The
curve at 7 being an easy one, the contacting surface of the flange and drum are not discenter of curvature. In other words, a. re; dius line drawn from said center through the two sheets, before the curving, would not be found much distorted after bending. This is important, as it enables me to maintain a tight joint, easily. The less this'metal is bent or strained, the more easily is this effected. I aim, therefore, to turn the rib 6 inward far enough to insure the curve desired and constitute the reinforce referred to below. The seam, therefore, is between parts bent upward to any angle less than a rentrant angle, 6., an angle reentrant with respectto the outer wall of the drum and the axis of rotation. The inner edges of the joint are preferably (thoughnotnecessarily) made flush with each other. The joint thus lies in the surface of a circle (orcone), the center of which circle or cone lies in the axis of rotation of the cylinder. Furthermore by bending these end portions of the shell and flanges inwardly to form the describedrib 6, it will be seen that this rib is so placed that it rovides a very eflicient reinforcement for t e extreme ends of the drum which renders these ends ver stifl and hence permits them to resist de ormation when meeting obstructions in the course of its use. Furthermore the weld being located as described, it will be seen that it is placed at the most adva-nt-a eous point for its protection, being not on y removed as far as possible from the surface upon which the roller is used, but also being placed adjacent to the inner surface of the strengthening rib. The possibility of the weld being opened when the roller meets an 0bstruction is therefore reduced to a minimum, as will be readily understood.
Having fully described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is -rently on a circumference drawn from the lltll I sheet of metal bent to form a cylindricah spectively of the end portions of the cylin der; 'the end portions of said sheet andthe inner surfaces respectively of'the end-- portions of the cylinder; the end-portions ofsaid sheet and flanges being bent inwardly. toward the axis of the cylinderthe joints between the inturned flanges and cylinder ends lying in surfaces situated at angles less than a reentrant angle to the axis of rotation and integrally united to each other at theirextremities. p

each formed with an outwardly extending flange; the end portion of said flanges and corresponding end-portions of said shell'being bent around toward the 'shells axis to form a strengthening rib, the joint formed between the ends and flanges lying in sur- 1 faces situated at angles less than angle to the axis of rotation.-

8. In a land roller, a drum, a head for said drum, said head having an outwardly extendiiig flange, the end of said drum and said ange being in water-tight contact turned or bent inward toward the drum axis on a .curveof sufficient radius to permit the maintenance of said water-tight connection, and said drum and flange constituting a strengthening web for the roller. 191Signed by me, this 16th day of August,
