ATTACHMENT FOR RULES.
APPupATmN FILED APR.14. 1915.

. TED STATEE RAY STRIEFF, OF IVIONROE, WISCONSIN.
ATTACHMENT FOR, RULES.
Application filed April 14, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAY STRIEFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Rules; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for rules and has for its principal object to provide a device which is particularly adapted to be attached to foot rules in order that the same may be retained in the pocket of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel form of clip capable of being held in various positions on the rule, so that the rule may be made to fit deeper and shallower pockets.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for causing the clip to grip the pocket and also engaging the face of the rule to hold the attachment against accidental movement.
Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specificatlon and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a View in elevation of a fragment of a rule showing the improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an en larged fragmentary side elevation of the rule showing the attachment thereon. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the attachment and the rule, and Fig. A is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates the leg of the rule to which the device is applied and the attachment comprises a pair of side members 2 which are formed wlth the flanges 3. These side members are provided at the edges opposite the flanges 3 with the inturned lugs 4 and the spaced parallel ears 5. The ears 5 are slit along one side edge and turned inwardly and aper- Specification of Letters Patent.

comprises the body 10 having the angular end 11 which is provided with suitable gripping teeth and the thumb piece 12. A suitable pivot pin 13 extends through the ears 5 and 8 and pivotally secures the clip 9 in place. Surrounding the pin is a suitable spring 14, one end of which bears against the thumb piece 12 of the clip as at 15,while the opposite end of this spring is extended inwardly toward and engaged with the face of the rule. It will thus be seen that the spring 14 resiliently retains the angular end 11 of the clip 9 against the adjacent face of the rule.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the device is adjusted by slipping the side members -2 upwardly or clownwardly on the leg of the rule and it will thus be seen that the rule may be placed in pockets of various depths.
Vfhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A rule attachment of the character de scribed comprising a pair of side pieces, flanges at the opposite longitudinal edges of the side pieces, ears extending in spaced relation from the side pieces, a spring connecting the side pieces for retaining the latter in frictional engagement with the leg of a rule and a spring pressed clip pivoted between the ears to hold the device in place on the garment of the wearer.
2. A rule attachment of the character de scribed comprising a pair of side pieces, flanges at the opposite longitudinal edges of the side pieces, ears extending in spaced parallel relation from the side pieces, a spring connecting the side pieces for retaining the latter in frictional engagement with the sides of the leg of a rule, a clip having a pair of spaced parallel ears pivoted be- In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature tween the first-mentioned ears, a pin formin presence of two Witnesses. ing a pivot for the clip and a spring sur- RAY STRIEFF rounding the pin, one end of said spring 5 bearing against the clip and the other end Vitnesses: I
