S. GROSSNIAN.
TRUNK CATCH. APPLICATION FILED DE'c.28,19I4.

cam/M SIMON GROSSMAN, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRUNK-CATCH.
messie.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 22, i916.
Application filed December 28,1914. Serial N o. 879,298.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, SIMON GRossMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State'of Pennsylvania, have invented cer: tain new and useful Improvements in TrunkCatches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in trunk catches, and refers particularly to the construction of the catch or hasp used in conjunction with the usual trunk lock.
One object of my invention is the provision of a catch which will permit of the use of a lock for securing the catch and absolutely preventing it from being released without removing the lock used in fastening the catch.
A further object of my invention is `the provision of a catch capable of being 'locked which will also perform the service of a handle in raising and lowering the trunk top or cover.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a catch which will also serve as an additional lock for the trunk and which will be of ornamental appearance, simple, durable and inexpensive of con-l struction and thoroughly efficient and practical in every particular.
Iith these objects in view my invention consists of a trunk catch, comprising a pivoted hasp or catch, a keeper for engagement with said hasp and a lock for securing the hasp to said keeper.
The invention further consists of a trunk catch embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts substantially as shown, described and particularly dened by the claim.
Figure l is a front view of a portion of a trunk equipped with my catches. Fig. 2 is a front view of the catch shown on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a side or edge view of the catch, and Fig. l is a vertical central sectional view.
My catch is used upon a trunk A, of usual construction provided with a hasp lock B, of any desired design, and preferably two of the catches are used disposed near each end of the trunk.
The individual catch consists of the plate C, secured to the cover of the trunk and provided with a loop forming a keeper D, and the plate E, secured to the main portion er body of the trunk and having pivotally mounted at F, therein the hasp G, formed with `an opening II, to snugly lit upon or over said keeper D, and a spring J is employed to snap the hasp into dengagement with said keeper.
Two or more of the catches are used and it will be noted that the hasp G engages and is retained by the keeper D, and to absolutely lock the hasp, I employ a lock K, of the padlock type whose staple L, is passed through the keeper and thus locks the hasp and forms a further safe guard for the trunk.
It will thus be seen that the catches in conjunction with the usual hasp lock, equip the-trunk with a series of locks performing the function of a catch, a lock and a handle for raising and lowering the hinged cover and that inaddition to possessing the advantages stated, the catch is ornamental, inexpensive and practical.
It will be understood that the position of my catch may be reversed and also that the catch may be used upon suit cases, boxes, or in fact upon any article where it would perform its function in a practical manner.
I claim:
A trunk catch consisting of a plate secured to one part of the trunk, having a loop projecting therefrom to provide a handle, a plate secured to the other part of the trunk, a casing formed on said plate, a hasp pivoted in said casing and formed with an opening to it over said handle, a spring engaging the frame of said hasp adapted to receive a locking means.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON GROSSMAN.
Witnesses:
PAULINE NEAMAN, M. G. EPSTEIN.
