Be it known that we, JOSEPH S'ro'r'r and WILLIAM STOTT, citizens of the United -States, residing at Worcester and Shrewsbury, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented a new and useful Picking-Motion for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The principal ob'ect of this invention is to provide a simpl' ed form of picking motionv of a more durable character than-'those now in use; also to provide a'construction in which the motion which corresponds most nearly with the usual picker stick motion shall be performed by a lever which does-not have any solid means secured to it that directly engages or operates the shuttle so that the Shock of operation will met be transmitted directly to this member; also to provide improved means whereby the shuttle-is ejected positively and the lever for causing4 this operation returned to normal position yieldingly and in which the shuttle ejecting operation can be performed readily and more than once during each operation of the actuating' shaft without providing the same with any complicated cam or crank system; and to provide a practical andl durable form of flexible actuating means for 'the shuttle.

For the purpose of operating the shuttle a flexible connection 20 in the form of a rope, chain or belt is shown. This passes'under a pulley`2l over two pulleys 22 and 23 and around a fourth pulley 24. These pulleys are arranged substantially in the same plane, the pulleys 22 and 23 being off-set from each 'other just enough to avoid interference of ,the different strands of the flexible connection or belt 20. Fixed on the upper strand of the belt 20 is an L-shaped plate 25 to which is fixed ya icker 26 which may bes 'of the usual raw liide construction. This plate 25 is preferably of sheet metal and guided by the picker rod 27 in the usual position. From this it \\'ill be seen that the complications which have been proposed heretofore are very largely done a\vay \vitl1. An exceedingly simple device is secured for operating the picker, eliminating the usual picker stick. power strap and certain connected parts, which are of short durability in practice l? or these are substituted dthe lever 13 which is not nearly as readily destructible as the usual picker stick and can be/made comparatively heavy and strong and consequently has a very great comparative durability. The belt or flexible connection is also added. If made of .rope it is very cheap and if made of leather or a metallic chain is more durable. In either case it involves decided advantages either in first cost or in total cost for a definite period oftime over the parts which are displaced in the ordinary loom. Furthermore, when necessary to' replace it, it can be done in a very simple manner as the removal of the old belt is done almost in an instant and the placing of the new one is a very short operation.
Although we have illustrated and described only a single embodiment of the invention we are aware 0f the fact/that many modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore we do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described, but

shuttle therein, said flexible connection hav` ing its two ends extending downwardly therefrom, and one of them having a guide around which it passes so that lat the extreme end it extends upwardly and vertically, a reciprocable lever to which both ends of the flexible connection are secured, means for positively moving said end'of the lever in a direction tocause the picker to eject the shuttle from the box, and yielding means for' moving the lever inA the opposite'pdirection.

In a picking motion for a loom, the combination of a lever mounted to oscillate, a spring, for normally holding the lever down, a rotatable shaft, means on said shaft for engaging the lever and elevating the operative end of the lever in opposition to said spring, a pulley located below the operative end of the lever on one side, two
pulleys'located above the operative end of the lever, a fourth pulley located substantially in the plane of the last two pulleys and at substantially. the same elevation as one of-them, a flexible connection having both ends secured to the lever, one end passing downwardly therefrom around the first named pulley, the connection extending upwardly on both sides and over the two pulleys and then around the last named pulley, a picker secured to the strand of the iexible connection between the lastnamed pulley and one of the two pulleys, and a shuttle box into which said picker' extends.

In a picking motion for a loom the combination of a lever mounted to oscillate, a pulley located beyond theoperative end of the lever on one side, two pulleys located on the other side of the operative end of the lever, a fourth pulley located substantially in the plane of the last two pulleys and at substantially the same distance from the lever as one of them, a flexible connection having both ends secured to the lever, one end passing beyond the same around the rst named pulley and then back by the lever to one of said two pulleys and then around the last named pulley, the other end of said flexible connection passing from the last named pulley over the other of said two pulleys and back to the lever, and a picker secured tothe flexible connection between the said last named pulley and one of said two pulleys.
