WARP-LET-OFF MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTTO IV. SOHAUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVarp-Let-Off Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements 1n warp let-oif mechanism for looms and one object of the invention is to construct a warp let-off mechanism so that the tension on the warp delivered from any particular warp-beam will be maintained practically uniform.
As showing a specific embodiment of the invention reference is made to the drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of the device and the manner in which it can be applied to a loom. Fig. 2 is a partial sectional plan view. In this figure a portion of some of the parts has been broken away and removed for the sake of clearness.
The invention shown on the drawing is an improvement on the let-off mechanism that is shown in U. S. Patent No. 584,798, granted to me on the 22nd day of June, 1897 the let-off mechanism is particularly adaptable for use in the type of looms illustrated in said patent.
In Fig. 1, 1 indicates a longitudinally extending rail or beam which connects or is connected to the usual frame members or housings of the machine. 2 designates a warp-beam having journals 3 at each end thereof which are mounted in slotted bearings 4 that are in side-frames 5 that are adjustably secured in place on the longitu-' dinally extending rail or beam 1 through the medium of a bracket 6. The warp-beam 2 has at each end thereof a flange or grooved disk 7 and a cable or cord 8 that enters the grooved portion of each of the flanges or grooved disks 7. In other words, there is a set of cables for each warp-beam and one set of ends of these cables is adjustably secured to a back-rack or lug 9that is carried by the side-framesthrough the medium of adjusting screws 10 and nuts 11. To the other set of ends of these cables there are secured terminals or carriers 12. These terminals or carriers support a shaft or bearing member 13 upon which there is revolvably mounted a warp-engaging roller 14. Circular members 15 which may hereinafter be referred to as brake-disks or rolling-disks are also carried by said terminals through the medium of the shaft 13. These disks can revolve relatively to the terminals or carriers 12 and are located between the ends of the warp-engaging roller 14 and the terminals or carriers.
These disks are also constructed and arranged so as to engage with and be positioned in the grooved portions of the inner warp-beam flanges or grooved disks 7. Levers 16 which are connected by a rod 17 constitute a set of lovers which are pivotally mounted upon the sideframes 5, at 18. At the free end of these levers there is a warp-engaging roller 19. Weights 20 are placed upon the rod 17 and the construction just described may be re ferred to as a weighted pivoted lever construction. The terminals 12 are each provided with a projection 21 which is arranged so as to project in the path of and be engaged by said levers 16 and consequently when the free end of the lever construction is raised, as by the upward pull of the warp W against the roller 19, it will raise the brake-disk 15 and lessen the tension of the cables or cords 8 which engage the grooved portions of the flanges or grooved disks 7. The brake-disks revolve in the same direction as but independent of the warp-engaging roller 1 and consequently the warp tension has only to overcome a rolling friction and in this way the let-oil of the warp is even and smooth, in other words, the braking effect can be made gradually and evenly since the brake-disk is a circular member that will not create any substantially increased binding or braking effect upon the grooved members as it is raised.
As will be seen from Fig. 1 the warp W passes from the warp beam over the warpengaging roller 14 upon which it exerts a downward pull, under the warp-engaging roller 19 upon which it exerts an upward pull, over the fixed roller 2-2 to the rest of the machine where desired. The sideframes 5 can be adjusted along the longitudinal rail or beam 1, as will be manifest from an inspection of Fig. 1 and the sideframes 5 can be vertically adjusted relative to said rail or beam through the medium of the bolt and slot construction 23.
The improvements herein set forth are not limited to the precise construction and arrangement shown and described for they may be embodied in various forms and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A loom having in combination, with the longitudinally extending rails or beams that connect or are secured to the main frames or housings, the warp-beam and the supporting side-frames therefor which are secured to said longitudinally extending beams, of flexible cords which engage grooves in flanges or grooved disks at each end of the warp-beam, one set of ends of said cords being adjustably secured to said side-frames and the other set of ends of said cords having thereupon terminals carrying bearings upon which is mounted a warpengaging roller, brake-disks carried by said terminals and located between the terminals and the ends of said warp-engaging roller, which brake-disks engage the grooves in the flanges or grooved disks, a set of pivoted levers carrying a warp-engaging roller, which levers are arranged so that as the free ends thereof are raised by the warp from the warp-beam pulling against the roller thereupon they will engage said terminals in a manner to lessen the braking effect of the brake disks and cords which engage the grooved portions of said flanges or grooved disks.
2. A let-ofl" mechanism for looms, which mechanism comprises in combination the warp-beam having grooved flanges or disks at each end thereof, side-frames carrying said warp-beam, of cables passing over said flanges in the grooves thereof, one set of ends of said cables being adjustably secured to said side-frames and the other set of ends of said cables having terminals secured thereto, a bearing member carried by said terminals, 1 warp-engaging roller supported by said bearing member, rolling disks carried by said terminals which rolling disks are located between'the ends of said roller and said terminals and are arranged so as to engage the grooved portion of the flanges or grooved disks, a weighted lever construction carrying a warp-engaging roller, which weighted lever construction is arranged whereby said construction can engage said terminals to release the braking eflect of the rolling disks and cables.
3. A device of the class described having in combination with the flanges or grooved disks of a warp-beam flexible cables seated in the grooves of said flanges or grooved disks, terminals carrying a warp-engaging roller which is free to revolve, rolling disks which can revolve in the same direction that said warp-engaging roller revolves but independent of the latter, which disks engage said flanges or grooved disks, and a weighted lever construction carrying a warp-engaging roller, said weighted lever construction being arranged so that it can release or lessen the braking effect of the flexible cables or cords and rolling disks carried at the ends of the cords.
4:- A device of the class described comprising in combination a warp-beam having flanges or grooved disks at each end thereof, side-frame members supporting said warpbeam, flexible cables or cords adjustably secured to said side-frame members, terminals supporting a warp-engaging roller which is free to rotate, and rolling disks which can rotate in the same direction as but independent of said warp-engaging roller, and a weighted lever construction having thereupon a second warp-engaging roller which weighted lever construction can engage and raise the terminals whereby the rolling disks will be moved upwardly and the tension of the cables which engage the grooved portions of the flanges or grooved disks will be decreased.
5. In a device of the class described the combination of a warp-beam having flanges or grooved disks at each end thereof, a flexible cable or cord engaging each flange or grooved disk in the grooved portion thereof, a warp-engaging roller carried by said cables or cords, rolling disks that can rotate in the same direction as but inclependent of said warp-engaging roller, which rolling disks engage the flanges or grooved disks at each end of the warp-beam, and means having a second warp-engaging roller whereby when suflicient pull is exerted by the warp against said last-mentioned roller the braking effect of the cables or cords upon the warp-beam will be lessened.
