To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN A. Born and Pxriuc'k HOGAN, citizens of the United States, residingat St. Marys, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clay- Products Surfacing Mechanism; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable-others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beirg', had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification. This invention relates to the manufacture of clay products, and especially to building materials, such as brick and wall tile.
The object of this invention is to provide mechanism whereby the surface of the brick or tile which is to constitute the weather face thereof, may be given a rough texture which resembles the roughness of Astrakahn cloth, or Persian lamb fur; This result we accomplish by providing scraper-like mech anism, which operates upon the column of clay as it emerges from the forming die of the auger machine and caused the surface' thereof to roll up under the edge of the scraper in small irregular rolls, which project in small points and knobs, beyond the body of the column, so that when the brick or tile so treated, are dried and burned, they will have a rough weather face closely resembling Astrakahn cloth or Persian' lambfur, which, when laid in a wall, has a very artistic and pleasing effect.

-In case it is desired to, operate on two surfaces, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, wemount another shaft B'-, in suitable brackets secured upon the die, upon which we secure scraper-blades b, as described in reference to the shaft B, which shaft B is driven from the shaft B, by means of miter gears 7/. In practice the column of clay moves at about one thousand feet an hour, and we .have found that the best resultsiare obtained by causing the scraper-blades to revolve at from two-hundredto three-hundred revolutions a minute; but-it may be found that desirable results can be obtained by revolving the scrapers at different speeds,

While we have shown and described. one
" form of scraper mechanism suitable for practising our invention, it is obvious that many other forms of mechamsm may be employed therefor, without departing from the spirit of our lllVOIltlOIl.
It is also obvious that instead of locating the suriaelng mechanism oi our invention adjacent to the die, it may be located at some distance from said die, and the column or blocks out therefrom carried to the same, Without departing from the spirit of our invention. Therefore we do not desire to be limited to the exact mechanism shown and described, but,
Having shown and desrribral our inrention so as to enable others to construct and utilize the same, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In a device of the class described, a
shaft, straight blades thereon, means to support the same in engagement with a column of clay, and means to rotate said shaft, whereby the sin-fare oi? the column will he caused to break into irregular upturned. no

2. In a device of the class described a clay fol-mine die, means to force a. continuously. moving column of clay through said die a shaft, supportial adjaceiit to said die, straight blades thereon adapted to eli'ect a trailing engagement with said column of clay, and means to cause said shaft and blades to rotate, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the rlass dcscribed, .i olay forcing merhanism adapted to eject a continuously moving: column of clay, a square shal't mounted transversely lo said column, straight scraper blades serured upon the llat sides of said aha' t and engaging said column with a trailing engagement, and means to cause said shaft and blades to rotate, whereby the surface ol said column is raused to break into upturned. irregular projections, substantially as described.
