LOUIS JOHNSON, or ORLAND, CALIFORNIA.
SKIVING-MACI-IINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1916.
Application filed April 5, 1916. Serial No. 89,033.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LoUrs JOHNSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Orland, in the county of Glenn and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skir ing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in leather skiving machines and while particularly designed for use in connection with a machine shown in a patent issued to Benjamin Medalic, Nov. 28, 1911, No. 1,010,065, may be employed in connection with any other skiving machine where it would perform its functions in a practical manner. 7
The main object of my invention is the provision of an attachment located adjacent the knife of the machine and which will serve as a guide and support for the leather, as well as a guard to prevent the operator from injury by contact with the knife of the machine.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a device which will serve the purposes stated, which can be easily applied or removed and which will add very little to the cost of the machine while greatly increasing its efficiency and desirability.
lVith these and such other objects in view as are inherent in a device of this character, my invention consists of a device forming a guard, guide and support, and located on the knife holder and adjacent to the knife.
The invention further consists of an at tachment of the character and for the purposes stated, embodying a novel construction in detail, substantially as shown, described and claimed herein.
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portion of a skiving machine, with my device applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device detached and for purpose of clearer illustration shown on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 4 is an edge view of the device.
In the drawings: The numeral 1 designates the feed wheel, 2 its shaft, 3 the idler or cooperating roller, 4 the yoke, 5 the work guide, 6 the support, 7 the knife holder, 8 its adjusting screw, and 9 the cutting blade or knife, which parts are shown in the machine referred to and in connection with which my device is used.
The device consists of a plate 10, having at one end an enlargement 11 formed with an opening to receive the screw 12, which secures the attachment as well as the knife 9, the said plate having the reduced body portion which is curved as shown at 13, forming a proper support to direct the leather and also to guard and protect the hand of the operator, and is further formed adjacent the enlargement with a depending lug 14, adapted to enter a socket in the knifeholder 7, for retaining the device in rigid and proper relation to the work guide and knife.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my attachment will be readily understood, and it will be at once apparent'that the device is located adjacent the work guide or table, and the knife and serves to support and guide the leather as well as to prevent the hand of the operator from contact with the knife, thus providing a very simple, durable and inexpensive device which will perform most important purposes, while not increasing the cost of the machine.
I claim:
1. In a skiving machine, the combination with a work guide and a blade, of an at taclnnent located adjacent thereto and forming a guide and support for the work and a guard.
2. In a skiving machine, the combination with a Work guide and a blade, of an attachment consisting of a plate having one end rigidly secured to a part of the machine and the other end forming a support for the work and a guard and located adjacent the knife and work guide.
3. In askiving machine, the combination with a work guide and a blade, of an attachment located adjacent theretoand forming a guide and support for the work and a guard, said attachment consisting of a plate having an intermediate anchoring device, and one end secured by one of the fastenings which fastens the knife in position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS JOHNSON. Witnesses:
JNo. J. FLAHERTY, EMERSON E. MARTIN.
