To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, SHANKER ABAJI BHISEY, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, and a resident of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Connected with the Molds of Type-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements connected with type-casting machines and has reference to the molds of type-casting machines.
Hitherto it has been usual in type casting machines to provide a complete set of molds for casting what are knownas space types or quads which have to be considerably shorter in length than character types. In the case of machines where the mold parts slide relatively to expose the type, it has been proposed to provide a set of matrices with projections, which projections, when the matrices move into the casting position, occupy part of the mold cavity and thus shorten the type cast. This method is, however, open to the objection that the continual rubbing of the projection between the mold parts as it is carried into and out of casting position results in wear upon the mold parts. i
The object of my present invention is to obviate these difficulties and provide a means whereby the same mold parts can be used for casting space types or quads as are used for casting character types and wherein rubbing is eliminated.
The invention consists broadly in providing set width'adjusting pieces which Vextend and fit within the mold cavity and which are rigidly attached to and move with the mold body piece. c
My invention further comprises the formation ofthese set width adjusting pieces as cores for casting quads or hollow space types where the'space types are of large size.
This application is a division of my prior application No. 55660, filed October 13, 1915, patented March 21, 1916, No. 1,176,726.

Referring to these drawings it will be understood that the general type of mold and mounting with which this invention has to do. are shown in several prior patents, for instance Patent 352,869, and in my prior Patent 1,176,726. In Figs. 1 4 the numeral the upper mold-part and the numeral 22 designates a'plate forming a base for the lower mold part. r Y

The member 23 has a portion at right angles to the length of the plate 22, and also assists in keeping 22a and 22b in place. In this type of mold the upper part closes upon the lower part and moves into casting position. Vhen character types are being cast the upper part moves into position and an abutment 23 comes into contact with the matrix to adjust the mold for set width.
According to my invention when space types are to be cast, I dispense with the matrix altogether and I provide attachments 24 which constitute set-width adjusting pieces and are attached by suitable means as afterward mentioned to one of the mold body pieces, and these attachments have projecting members 25 which project into and occupy part of the mold cavity and thus shorten the mold. These attachments may be constructed integral with side blocks corresponding in thickness to the part of the ordinary matrix between character and the edge, but I prefer to provide separate pieces such as 26 of this thickness, and I provide a number of the attachments 24 as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the required set widths. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1-3, I fasten the attachment 24 and the separate side block 26 to the projecting portion of the plate 23 by means of a bolt or screw 18. It is thus only necessary to change the attachments 24 when it is desired to change the set width adjustment when casting space types. It will be understood that the attachments are connected to and move with the mold body piece. It will be seen that-the attachments 24 serve not only` to shorten the mold cavity, but also as set width adjustment pieces. It will be seen that in Figs. 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, S and 9 I have shown a nick forming member 19 in place in the mold. Moreover, I have shown a plate or member 28 lin Figs. l, 3, 7 and 9 the utility of which will be explained later. It has, however, nothing to do with my present invention. In all t-he gures, moreover, it will be understood that complemental sprue break or tang casting blocks 17 are carried by the plates 21 and 22 respectively. These blocks are cut at 16 so that when placed together there is a passage for forming the sprue or tang.
The operation of casting space types is precisely similar to the casting of ordinary types except that no matrix is employed. rlhat is to say, after the casting operation, the upper part 21 of the mold turns slightly about its hinge in the usual way and the type coming in contact with a fixed part 28 of the mold drops out and slides of the .lower mold part, the mold as a whole being arranged upon an incline for this purpose. When character types are cast they are pushed out of the mold from both the break or tang end and the character end, and if it is'desired to enable this to be done where space types are cast, this can be accomplished 1by constructing the projections 25 of the attachments 24 in the form shown in Fig. 5 with a cut away portion 29 which results ink the types being cast with break pieces at both ends. In this case it is necessary to provide a block 30 carried by a swinging frame 31 pivoted at 32 for closing the mold. It will be understood that the construction of Fig. 5 is like that previously described for Figs. 1,2 and 3 except as to the recess 29 and the parts 30, 31 and 32 just mentioned. In operation, this block would move into the casting position as shown in Fig. 5, and when the mold opens to discharge the type, this block will swing out so that the extremities of the type will come into contactwith fixed parts of the machine and be evenly pushed out. Figs. 6 and 7 show a modiiied method of shortening the mold cavity. In this case the lower half of the mold body piece is provided with a sliding set width adjustment piece 33 which is adjustable by means of a screw 34. In this form there is a piece 23 somewhat similar to the piece 23 of Fig. 2 and lying in front of the movable part 33. Then character types are being cast, this sliding piece 33 is adjusted so that its end 35 is flush with the edge 36 of the mold body piece, and it will be understood that when it is required to cast space types this end 35 is adjusted into the mold cavity the required distance accordingl to the set width of space type it is desired to cast.
Figs. 8, 9, and 10 illustrate a slight modilication of the method of shortening the mold described in relation to Figs. 6 and 7 In this case instead of the single set width adjusting pieces 33 in Figs. 6 and 7, both the mold parts are provided with sliding pieces 39, the extremities 40 of which overlap in the casting position-one being adjusted in one direction and one in the opposite direction-and a small cavity 41 is left between the two members and forms an extension of the break mold. The mold is l closed at its end by a matrix block 37 which ment in'Figs. 8, 9 and 10 is the same as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 but that the4 blocks 21c and 22c are slightly modiiied as compared with blocks 21b and 22b in order to receive the set width adjusting members 39. When the parts are in casting position, the members V39 are held firmly in place by the surrounding parts.

It will be understood that the general form of mold and mold parts shown and described herein were known prior to my present invention and are shown herein merely as illustrative of a convenient type of Titchener mold, my invention consistingin the combination with said necessary mold parts of set width adjusting pieces which shorten the mold for the purpose of casting space types.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a type casting machine, in combination, a mold composed of relatively movable parts, and a set width adjusting member carried by one of said parts and adjustable into the mold cavity to shorten said cavity and held in position to shorten said cavity when casting space types, said adjusting member being immovable relative to its supporting part during the complete casting cycle.
2. In a type casting machine in combination a mold composed of relatively movable half parts, and a set width adjusting member carried by one of said parts and adjustable into the mold cavity to shorten said cavity and held in position to shorten said cavity when casting space types, said adjusting member being immovable relatively to its supporting half part during the complete casting cycle.
3. In a type -casting machine, in combination a mold consisting of an upper part and a lower part, and slidable members associated with said parts having opposed ends adapted to overlap, said mold parts being shaped to receive said members whereby the opposing ends of said members may be placed in the mold cavity in position to shorten said cavity, said members being immovable relative to their supporting parts during the complete casting cycle.
4. In a type casting machine, in combination, a mold consisting of an upper and a lower part, and a slldable member associated with each part at the break or tang end of the mold, said members having opposing ends spaced apart vertically, said mold parts being shaped to receive said members whereby said members may be placed with their ends projecting into the mold cavity and overlapping to shorten the mold cavity, whereby the types are cast with a break extension within the mold, so that upon detachment of the break and its eX- tension space types are produced.
