FUMIGATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 18,1916.
Application filed February 27, 1914. Serial No. 821,410.
To all whom it may concern: p
- Be it known that I, ALBERT H. ZIEGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kiester, in the county of Faribault and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fumigators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved fumigator, particularly used to discharge smoke and gasinto ground burrows, pocket channels dug, or inhabited by animals such as pocketgophers and moles which injure and destroy trees and crops in order to overcome or asphyxiate them or drive them from the burrows, pockets'or channels.
The invention aims to provide an effective device to accomplish the purpose stated that is made in a number of sections'facilitating adjustment to supply fuel and to provide a novel construction of parts and means for fastening the partstogether.
In preferred form the device is illustrated in accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is-a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the fumigator proper, and Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring particularly to the drawings the device is portable and hand operated and to this end a foot pump 1 is provided having a fumigator designated 2 as a whole fastened therein as by means of bands at 3. Any form of pump may be used and from its cylinder leads a pipe or tube 4. Said tube 4 is connected to nipple 5 in the top wall of a cylindrical casing 6 of the fumigator. Said fumigator casing is open atone end and into the same is slidably disposed a cylindrical fuel chamber7 open at both ends.
A closure or base section is removably attached to the casing having a bottom plate I 15 an upstanding flange 16 at a distance from the casing 6 and between the same and said I wall is mounted andpacked with suitable packing 17 which may be asbestos, and is used to form a joint preventing the escape of smoke. Chamber 7 removably rests on the plate 15 and interiorly of the chamber 7 is a removable conical grate or wire screen 18 resting on the plate 15. On the plate 14 is av depending nipple 20 from which ex- 7 tends a flexible hose or pipe 21. Springs 23 depend from a cross bar 24, preferably restmg on the top of casing 6 which have hooks 25 loosely and removably entering eye 26 in flange 16.
In use with the closure 14 and chamber 7 removed, the chamber 7 is placed on the closure with the grate thereon and the packing in place, fuel 22 is placed in the chamber 7 and ignited then said parts are positioned with respect to the casing and the hooks passed through the openings or eyes 26. The springs hold the chamber within the casing. The closure is then positioned with the packing arranged as seen in Fig. 2, frictionally engaging against both the exterior of the cylinder or casing 6 and the wall or flange 16. The pipe 21 is placed adjacent the channel or burrow and the pump operates so that air willpass through tube 4 into the fumigator and cause the discharge of smoke and gases through the pipe 21. The fuel used is of such nature as to produce smoke in great volumes and may be of any suitable material.
I claim: I
1. A fumigator having a casing, air inlet means therefor, a closure member. at the base of said casing, said closuremember having an upstanding wall distanced from the exterior of the casing provided with openings, meansto engage said upstanding wall to detachably connect the casing and closure member, the space provided by said wall containing packing and in addition to forming a packing chamber, enabling the said means to engage said openings, a fuel chamber within the casing resting on the closure member, outlet means leading from the closure member, and a grate arranged within the fuel chamber and resting on said closure member and spaced from said outlet means to prevent clogging thereof. 1
2. A fumigator having a casing, air inlet means therefor, sa1d casing be ng closed at 1ts top, a bar removably extend ng across said top, said closure member having an up standing wall distanced from the exterior to provide a space, said wall having openings therein, hooks depending from said bar to detachably engage in said openings, means to permit yielding movement of the hooks to facilitate attachment and detachment in said openings, the space provided by said closure member and spaced from said out- Wall containing packing and in addition to let means to prevent clogging thereof. 10 forming a packing chamber, enabling the In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hooks to engage in said openings, a fuel in presence of two Witnesses. chamber Within the casing resting on the ALBERT H. ZIEGLER.
' closure member, outlet means leading from Witnesses:
the closure member, and a grate arranged F. A. JOHNSON, Within the fuel chamber and resting on said L. H. HAEGER.
