To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. TOOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Internal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to an internal combustion motor and is an improvement upon that type of such motors in which one or more cylinders are employed with a corresponding number of pistons and the piston in each cylinder is driven on one side onl The object of my present invention is the provision of an internal combustion motor in which the piston is driven positively in both directions, an impulse being imparted to the same from one side to drive it in one direction and a second impulse is imparted to the same from the other side thereof to drive it in the opposite direction, so that the weight of the motor per developed horse power is substantially reduced one-half, with a corresponding reduction in size and consequent space necessarily occupied by the machine.
In carrying out my invention, the motor preferably comprises a cylinder, a cylindrical piston in the cylinder, and an internal water jacketed head suitably supported and extending into the piston and forming therewith an internal combustion chamber, providing for a compartment in which the second explosion takes place to drive the piston on its return stroke, the other end of the cylinder being constructed and acting in the same manner as is now common in two-cycle motors.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal cross section of an internal combustion motor embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to the position of the parts as shown in Fig. 1. Referring particularly to the drawing, my improved motor comprises a cylinder 10, which at its inner end is provided with a water cooled jacketed head indicated at 11. This water cooled 'acketed head is provided with a circular base 12 in which, on one side, is a water inlet 13, and on the opposite side a water outlet 14. Within the head 11 is a passage 15 extending from the inlet 13 through the extremity 16 of the jacketed head and to the outlet 14. The cylinder 10 preferably rests on and is connected to the base of the water jacketed head, which in turn is supported upon and connected to the upper member 17 of the crank case, the lower member 18 of which is suitably connected to any desired base. The upper or outer end of the cylinder, as 15 the common practice, is provided with a jacket 19 and the water inlet 20 on one side, and the water outlet 21 on the other side adjacent to the end of the cylinder, making suitable provision, as will be understood, for cooling this end of the apparatus. Within the cylinder, I employ a piston 22, which is preferably cylindrical. At its inner or lower end, the piston 22 is preferably provided with a flange 25 adapted to fit within and slide upon the inner surface of the wall 2 L of the cylinder. The piston adjacent to its head is provided with suitable packing rings 26, and also the water cooled jacketed head 11, adjacent to its extremity is provided with suitable packing rings 27, making a tight joint between the same and the inner walls of the piston, and furthermore the flange 25 on the piston is also fitted with suitable packing rings 28, making a tight joint between the same and the walls 24 of the cylinder. Also at its lower or inner end, the piston, on opposite sides thereof, is provided with lugs 29, in which there are bearings adapted to receive the pins 30 of the connecting rod 31, the opposite end of the connecting rod being connected to the prank 32 of the shaft 33, which is journaled in bushings 34 placed in suitable bearin s.
It will be note? that the connecting rod 31 is divided longitudinally, in order that the outer or piston end of the same may be connected to the piston and also that I prefer to provide a bushing 35 between the opposite end of the connecting rod and the pin of the crank arm, a suitable cap 36 being employed to connect and secure this end of the connecting rod on the bushing 35.
On one side of the cylinder, and running longitudinally therewith is a rib, making provision for the inlet port 37 to the explosion chamber between the walls of the cylinder and the piston at the upper or outer end of the motor, and in the walls of the cylinder there" are exhaust ports 38.
