Be it known that I, HARRY J. HICK, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Chio, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Filing Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates toa Vfiling appliance for sales bills and other similar papers, in which a. series of bill holders are operatively mounted in a fire-proof case comprising a rectangular base section, and a similar cover section adapted to be swung an shifted upon the base section to incase the .bill holders when closed, and to form a back for the same when open.
In a former application, filed July 25, 1914, Serial No. 853,062, a filing appliance of this type or character tinted, described and claimed, in which a portion or division of the series of hinged holders have their hinged ends pending from a pivotal connection with cover section, with means and guiding the free end of the holders upward and forward from within the base section over the forward rim thereof, and eX- tensible frames within each side of the case having counterbalancing springs therein for the cover section of the case and elevating and sustaining springs therein for the depending hinged ends of the holders:
The object of the present invention is to provide improved operative connections between the elevating and sustaining springs and the hinged end of the lower holder. This object is attained by pivoting a swinging link to the head of the elevating and sustaining springs, by providingla longitudinally slotted lifting lever with its rear end pivoted in the rear end ofthe case and its forward end pivoted to the lower end of the swinging link, and by providing lateral pins on the hinged end of the lower Vholder or its supporting frame operating in the longitulever for elevating dinal slot of the lifting of the lower and sustaining the hinged end holder. The case is composed of the substantially' rectangular bottom or basesection land the top or cover section 2, which are operatively connected together by means of guiding hinge brackets 3, one being located on each side of the rear end portion ofthe Vbase section; by means of which the cover section can be swung and shifted upon the base section to aline either the top or rear end of the cover section with the rear end of the base section.
The series of bill holders land 4 are hinged together at their lower rear ends, and the pivots 5 between two adjacent intermediate holders 4a and 4b are mounted in the bearings 6 secured tothe rear rim of theV cover section; so'that the holders above these bearings may be referred to as vthe upper division of the series, and the holders below these hearings may be referred to as the frame 8, which preferably contains anindex, Y
for the bill holders; and inclined tracks 9 areprovided in the forward end of the base section ofthe case,` on which tracks the forward end of the frame 8 may slide downward and rearward into they base section when its rear end `is carried downward and rearward by its pendent connection with the rear rim of the cover section,
when the sameY is losed downward upon the base section as shown in Fig. 2.
The counterbalance frame is composed of the bearing head 10 o'n its lower end, the outer and inner guide rods ll and l2 secured to the bearing head at thev lower ends,

the main sliding head 13 having apertures 14 therein for each of the guiding rods 11 and 12, and the minor sliding head 15 having apertures 16 therein for the inner guide rods 12.
The outer and inner coiled compression springs 17 and 18 are located around the outer and inner guide rods 11 and 12, the outer spring extending between the bearing head 10 and the main sliding head 13, and the inner springs extending between the bearing head 10 and the minor sliding head 15. Y
The lower end of the bearing head is pivoted on thepost 19 secured to the side wall in the forward portion of the base section of the case, and preferably near the bottom thereof; and the main sliding head is pivoted on the post 2O secured to the side wall in the rear of the middle of the cover section of the case and preferably below the median line thereof.
The lifting lever 22 is provided with a longitudinal slot 24 from one end to the other, and the lateral pins 25 are provided on the hinged ends of the frame 8, which pinsextend into and are adapted to slide along the longitudinal slot 24 in the operation of the appliance. n
rThe parts and the strength of the springs are so proportioned and arranged that when the cover section is swung and shifted into upright position upon the rear end of the base section of the case with the bill holders carried forward into reclined position, as shown in Fig. 3, the main head 13 will slide upward to the extreme upper ends Y of the guide rods 11 and 12, and the engagement of the lateral pins 25 in the slot of the lifting lever 22 draws the pendent link 21 and the minor sliding head 15 downward on the guide rods 12 a substantial distance below the main head 13 so as to compress the inner springs 18, as shown in the same figure.
. In this relation of the parts it is evident that the bill holders 4, 4? and 4b, comprising the upper division of the series, may be rof tated upon their hinged ends into upright position, either singly or collectively; in which upright position the upper-rear holder of this division .is sustained and guided by the abutment rollers 26 provided on the sides of the Cover section, and the forward holder 4EL thereof is supported by the pivotal bearings 6 on the rear rim of the cover seotion, all as shown in Fig.a 5; so that the rotated holders of this division will be maintained in upright position by the action of gravity in the manner well known in this art. Furthermore, when one or more of the bill holders 4, 4a and 4V, comprising the lower division of the series, are rotated on their hinged ends into upright position, as shown for all these holders in Fig. 5, the energy of the inner compression springs 12 acting through the links 21A will lift the levers 22 upward, thereby elevating and sustaining' the hinged ends of the frame 8 and the holders thereon; so that all the holders in the lower division of the series which have been rotated into upright position, will be maintained in such position by the sliding and bearing of the lateral pins 25 in the forward portion of the longitudinal slot 24 in the lifting lever 22.
For closing the case, it is preferred to rotate all the bill holders ofthe series forward upon their hinged ends into reclined positions, super-posed upon the frame 8, as shown in Fig. 3; whereupon a forward swinging and rearward shifting of the cover section to close it upon the base section will carry the frame 8 Vand superposed holders thereon bodily downward and rearward within the two sections of the case, as shown in Fig. 2; during which movement the forward end of the frame 8 slides downward upon thc tracks 9. During the first portion of this movement it is evident that the energy of only the outer compression springs 17 will be brought into play to oounterbalance the weight of the cover section until the main head 13 slides downward upon the guide rods far enough to impinge the minor slide head 15, whereupon the energy of the outer compression springs 17 will be supplemented by the energy of the inner compression springs 18; so that' all the compression springs will serve to counterbalance the weight of the cover section during the final portion of this downward movement toward and upon the base section of the case; and reversely, all the compression springs will serve to assist in elevating the cover section during the first portion of'its movement into upright position.
It will be understood thatas the frame 8 and the superposed holders are carried downward and rearward within the case, the lateral pins 2'5 on the rear en'd of the frame will slide rearward along the longitudinal slot -24 in the lifting lever 22 to the rear end thereof, as shown in Fig. 2; during which movement the lifting lever rocks downward upon its rear end pivot to or near the bottom of the case; and that if necessary, the pivotal bearing inthe upper end of the pendent link 21 may be slotted to accommodate the parts in this relation. It will also be understood that for the purpose of the present invention the frame 8 may be considered merely as the lower holder of the series, or that the lateral pins may be located on the holder next above the frame instead of being connected therewith by means of the frame, without making any material change in the operation of the parts. And finally, it is preferred to bend or deflect the lifting lever and its longitudinal slot upward at or near the place intermediate its ends where the frame pins bear when the holders of the lower division are in reclined operative position, as shown in Fig. fl; so the forward portion of the lever is positioned to properly perform its lifting functions.

1. A filing case including similar base and cover sections with hinge connections for swinging the cover section upon the base section, a plurality of hinged holders mounted in the case having their hinged ends depending from a pivotal connection with the rear end of the cover section, a lifting lever having its rear end pivoted in the rear end of the base section, spring means for elevating the forward end of the lifting lever, and means connected with the hinged end of the lower holderhaving sliding and bearing engagement with the lifting lever.

A ling case including similar base and cover sections with hinge ,connections for swinging the cover section upon the base section, a plurality of hinged holders mounted in the case having their hinged ends depending from a pivotal connection with the rear end of the cover section; a spring-sustained swinging link, a lifting lever having its rear end pivoted to the base section and its forward end pivoted to the swinging link, and means connected with the hinged end of the lower holder having bearing and sliding engagement lifting lever.

A ling case including similar base and cover vsections with hinge connections for swinging the cover section upon the ybase section, a plurality of hinged holders mounted in the case having their hinged ends depending from a pivotal connection with the rear end of the cover section; means for supporting and guiding the forward ends of the holders upward and forward over the forward rim of the base section; counterbalance means for the cover section including a bearing head pivoted to the base section having a plurality of guide rods thereon, and a main head pivoted to the coversection having sliding engagement with the rods; and lifting means for the hinged ends of the holders including a minor head in the path of the main head having sliding engagement with certain rods, a swinging link depending from the minor head, a lever containing a longitudinal slot having its rear endpivoted to the base section and its forward end pivoted to the swinging link, and lateral pins connected with the hinged end of the lower holder for bearing and sliding in the slot of the lever; there being compression springs on the guide rods between the bearing head and the respective sliding heads.
