PLUNGER-PUME.
trauma,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ma II, rare.
flpplication flled July 21, 1913. I Serial No. 780.173.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, Dr: Wrr'r C. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing; at the city of LOS Angeles', in the county of Les Angeles and State of California, have 1nvented new and useful Imprbvements in PlungerPumps, ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to a plunger pump for pumping deep oil wells. In pumping deep oil wells it 1s very deslrable that the flow of oil through the plunger shall be asfree as possible and that on the downward movement of the plunger that it shall freelyfill with oil. When the plunger carries a packing to make the joint between it-and the pump barrel a working fit the size of the plunger must be reduced to accommodate the rings thereby diminishing the internal diameter of the plunger.
It is the object of my invention to producea deep well pump especially adapted for pumping oil wells in which there shall be an increased internal diameter in the plunger thereby producinga maximum flow of liquid therethrough and to provide a plunger for use with the Garbutt attachment theflow of 011 through the plunger shall not be diminished by said attachment.
To that end the essential feature of my invention is the construction of .a pump barrel in two sections with the lower section of a greater diameter than the upper-sec- Y section on the line 2- -2 of Fig. l with parts in elevation.
In the drawings 5 is the upper section of the pump barrel which I will distinguish from the lower section by calling it the lift section. To the lower end of the lift section is screwed the lower section 6 of the pump barrel which I distinguish from the i the standing valve in which upper section by calling it the filling sec-' -mounted valve 9. To the top of the cage is,
secured the operating rod 10. In the bottom of the plunger .is screwed the usual pierced Garbutt plug 11 through which passesthe stem 12 of the Garbutt attachment for removing the standing valve and cage 13 which is secured to the lower end of the filling section of the pump barrel in the usual well known .manner. In the sides of the plunger above plug 11 are a plurality of long narrow slots 14 which with the opening'thr'ough the plug are of a slightly greater area than thecrossinternal area of the plunger above the slots. v
The lift section of the pump barrel is of a length that onthe upstroke of the plunger the slots in the plunger do not come into I. the lift section of the barrel and on the down stroke of the plunger the top of the plunger does not goquite to the bottom of the lift section. The filling section of the pump barrel is of a sufficiently larger diameter than the lift section to permit enough oil to surround the plunger on its downward I stroke and enter the. slots in the sides of the lower end of the plunger which with'the opening through the Garbutt plug will furnish oil. to freelyv fill the plunger. The
length of the sections of the pump barrel is governed by the stroke desired.
section of the barrel and the plunger I do away with all packing rings and am able to make the opening through the plunger larger than if packing rings were provided.
'lBymaking the diameterof the filling section of the pump barrel larger than the lift section and by providing slots in the lower end of the side wall of. the plunger,- the plunger freely fills and thereby a pump of increased'capacity over one using packing rings is provided and at a less cost.
7 Having describedmy invention what '.I claim is:
.lL In a deep well pump the combination of a pum barrel, composed of a lift section and a filling section, the filling section having a greater diameter than the lift section;'
a tubular plunger having slots in the side walls thereof near its bottom, said plunger having a-working fit in the lift section and a clearance in the filling section; a valve v By making a working fit between the lift cage secured to and at the top of said plunger; a valve in said valve cage; a pierced tubular plug secured in the bottom of said plunger below the slots therein; a standing valve secured to the bottom of the pump barrel; and a Garbutt attachment secured to said standing valve and having the stem of said attachment passing through the plug in the bottom of the plunger.
2. In a deep well pump the combination of a pump barrel, composed of a'lift and a fillingsection, the .filling sectionhaving a greater diameter than the lift section; a tubular plunger having slots in the sidewalls thereof near its bottom, said plunger having a working fit in the lift section and a clearance in the filling-section; a valve cage secured to and at the top of said plunger; .a
valve in said valve cage; a pierced tubular plug secured in the bottom of said plunger have hereunto subscribed my name this 10th :0
