EDWARD B. SCHREITER, JR., OIE DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
.AUTOMOBILE-LOCK.
. Application fil-ed April 10, 1914. Serial No. 831,061.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. ScirRE'rrEn, J r., acitizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigam'have inthey can be readily towed or moved out of the garage or other place in case of tire .or if it is desirable to shift them a short d 1stance without applying their own motive power.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly setiorth in the appended claims.
In .the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section of av device that embodies the invention, parts being broken away to give clear -view and the same being shown in closed or locked position, Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of thedevice partially broken away and with an exte rior casing unlocked and removed; F ig. 3 is a view of the back of the device; Fig. 4 is a view in side flevatioiiof the ,device with the casing in position, a valve casing beingl omitted; Fig. 5 is a View taken on or about line V-V of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 isa diagrammatic view showing the device 1nstalled in proper relation to the ignition system, self starting mechanism and fuel feed supply of an automobile.
Referring to the drawings, a rear base plate 1 carriesa pair of guidemembers 2, herein shown as studs on which a main slide member 3 is longitudinally' reciprocable, the slide member having `elongatedslots as indicated in proper engagement with the guides. A spring finger 4 or other suitably disposed like member normally .holds the slide member 3 in retracted posi- .tion at which time and in whicliposition rock arms 5 and 6 are respectively thrown through engagement of their -torked ends 7 and-8 with insulated bushings 9 and 10 on thefslide, sof that Vtheir other arms 11 and 12 respectively. close longitudinal gaps on switch blocks 13 and 14.' Conducteis 15 and 15 are connected inseriesby .suitable termi- 'nal screws 17 or the with the switch Specification of Letters Patent.

block 13 while corresponding- Vconductors 181.8 'are similarlyconnected to the switch block 14. As a result of this arrangement the slide in its normal position establishes 6e electrical connection through the conductors 15, 1 5 and 1S, 18, the'formei of whiehniay be iii series with the battery ignition circuit of a cai', while the other 18, 18 are: simi-1 larly in series with or in the circuit ofthe 6.5 magneto or generator system of avcar., Such an arrangement is shown diagran'imatically A in F ig. 6. While it-is retracted by the spring member 4, the slide also holds Closed a switch that may beconveniently mounted 7o on the back ofthe base 1 and'is of 'a type suitable forfcarrying the current of a-selt starting device.
As herein shown insulated spaced terminals 19 mounted Von the slide are adapted 75 tobe snapped by the spring 4 into sliding engagement with spaced terminal lingers 20 and thereby close the circuit .indicated at 21 through a motor 22 and generator 23,
the motorbeing operatively coupled by suitl able means tothe engine 24 of the car.l
lVhen thus retracted by the spring 4 and in normal position an upturned lng or lat-v' eral extension 25 on the slide that is in longitudinal alinement with a spring plunger 85 26 clears the latter so as to allowit to be raisedby the abut-ting Contact of a spring projected closure 27. The latter isnof'thel ball type that is'sea'ted in a valve casing 28 for which it'forms the seal, the casing '90 being supported and attached to the base 1 by a .sleeve 29'and clip 80. The sleeve also operates as a housing for the plunger- 2G `which passes througha suitable packing depresses. the latter when the lever is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2. When' in' such position a latch plate 36 is snapped by the action of asuitably disposed spring 37 1 into such interloeled relation with the slide im S'tiiat 1t retains 'the latter regardless 'of ani.r
