Mounted for rotation upon lthe spindle end of the box 1 is a ring`13 having four ini.i'ol1,'vvhereby to connect'them for simulta- Wardly projecting cams 14 at its outer edge A overlapping ,the lspindle end ofthel box l, .and bearingy againstthey studs 12,v so that when the 'rin-g 13 is rotated in one directie openings ,8., further, thereby-compressin g the .springs 9 and increasing the tensionthereof.
The spindle endof the boxl has a pair of diametrioallyopposite outstanding lugs ics the camsltvvi-ll force the heads 10 into t e 15 through whichV adjusting screws 16 are threaded to bear against the ends of two diametrically opposite cams 141, whereby when said screws 16 are projected from the lugs 15, they will rotate the ring 13 in the direction for bringingthe springs 9 under greater tension. When the screws 16 are retracted to remove the cams 1st from the bosses 12, the ring 15 can be slipped oif of the box 1 and moved back onto the spindle.
In order to yieldably move the coupling box 1 into engagement with the end portion or Wabble 5 of the roll 3, spring means are disposed between the spindle and coupling box, and to this end a pair of diainetrically opposite lugs 7 are each provided remote from the box 1 witha pair of outstanding ears 17 and the web 18 therebetween and oi' shorter length thair'the ears 17. The end fork 19 of a bolt or rod 20 straddles the web 18 between the cars 17, to be held in place thereby, and adjusting nuts 21 are threaded upon the bolt 20. A coiled expansion spring 22 is disposed between the nuts 21 of each bolt 20 and the shoulder 26 formed by the collar (S at the respective ends of the recesses of the portion el, centering pins 24 .being threaded into the shoulder 23 for holding the adjacent ends ot the springs 22 in place. By adjusting the nuts 21, the tensions of the springs 22 can be adjusted as desired, andsaid springs in tending to expand will force the coupling box 1 away from the spindle toward the roll, thereby holding the box and roll assembled, to prevent their accidental detachment.
l/Vhen it is desired to remove or replace the roll, it is necessary to slip the box 1 back onto the spindle, and this can be readily done by disengaging` the vtoi'ks 1S) from the Webs 18, the nuts 21 being loosened if necessary. Then, when the bolts 20 and springs 22 are removed, the box 1 can lic moved freely to retracted position, whereby the roll can either be removed or applied whichever is the case.

The parts may be readily 'assembled and factured and installed.
1t is to be tinted that the springs 22 permit the spindle and roll toyield longitiidif separated, and can be inexpensively manunall or axiall f relative to one another and this is of special advantage when a series of rolls are coupled together, for should one roll breakat van angle, to force the sections thereofl apart longitudinally, the springs 22 would give and thus prevent end .thrust on other rolls.
