To all whom it may concern:

-Be' it known that I, RICHARD LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrimac, in the county ofEssex and StateofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw 1n S.

lily present invention relates broadly to new and useful improvements in barrels of the stave type and has particular reference to an improved fastening means for holding the head in proper position within the chime groove of the staves.

One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a sheet metal retaining band which serves not only as a buffer for protecting the chimes against injury from contact with foreign ob ects but also as a means for firmly and yieldably holding the head against withdrawal from the chime groove.

The improved retaining band or hoop of this invention, which is best illustrated as an entirety in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings and designated by the letter A, is applied to the chimes 10 of an ordinary barrel 11 having a head 12 of conventional deforms part of thisapplication.

The body portion 11 is pro vided at one end with an extension 14: and said extension 145 and the opposite terminal of the body 14 are provided with oppositely disposed, transversely extending open slots 17 to produce connecting lugs 18, theslot in the extension 14* being arranged in the upper margin thereof while the slot 17 in the body 14 is positioned at the lower margin thereof. When the terminals of the body member are mated in the manner shown in Fig; 4 the two lugs interlock, thus holding the band in secure engagement against the chimes. Apertures, indicated at 19 are formed in the terminals of the member 14: are positioned to register with each other when the lugs are interlocked so that a screw or similar fastening means may be employed, as an additional element for fastening the member 14 t0 the barrel.

The outer edge of the member .14 extends beyond the ends of the staves so that the spring flange 15, which extends inwardly toward the barrel head, and at an acute angle to the member 14, will not interfere with the chimes. The lip 16 extends at an approximate right angle to the body member 14 of the band and at an acute angle to the spring flange, being adapted to flatly engage against the head of the barrel adjacent the periphery thereof.

From the'foregoing description and particularly upon reference to Fig. 2 it will now be readily observed that the body band 14 may now be easily and quickly attached to the barrel with the lip 16 disposed in engagement with the barrel head. Due to the resiliency of the spring flange, it is obvious that the lip will be yieldably held at all times against the head with suflicient force to retaln this member in seated position within the chime groove.

In reduction to practice, it has been found that the form of this invention illustrated with the adoption of thisvdevice will necessarily vary, it is desirable to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claim.

What is claimed is The combination with a barrel having a chime groove and a head seated therein, of a retaining hoop formed from a single strip of sheet metal shaped to produce an annular band which is adapted to embrace the chimes on the outer face thereof, an angularly extending, inwardly directed annular spring flange the band and bridging the chime of the barrel, and an annular head engaging loop formed on the inner face of the flange and extending toward the band and in a plane formed on the outer edge of.

approximately at right angles thereto, one end of the annular bandbeing provided with an extension, said extension and the opposite end. terminal of the band being provided with oppositely directed transversely disposed open slots, the slot of the extension being arranged in theupper marginal portion thereof and the slot in the opposite terminal of the band being arranged in the lower marginal portion thereof, said slots aflording interlocking lugs, the opposite terminals of the band inwardlyof the slots being provided with openings adapted to register for the passage therethrough of an anchoring medium.
