Boston, in the county of. Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lasting-Machines, o-fwhich the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, drawings indicating like parts in. the several figures.

There are also the usual adjusting devices for accommodating the plane of the wipers to the longitudinal and transverse inclinations of the bottom of the last. I
The wipers 6, which have an edge contour shaped to embrace completely the toe portion of a shoe, are plates detachably secured to wiper carriers 8 and 9 interposed be tween a table formed on the machine frame and a cover plate 14. The wiper carriers are provided with cam slots 16, 16 which receive stationary guide rolls 17 secured between the table and cover plate 1 1 and are connected by links 18 and a cross head 20 with a plunger 22 extending longitudinally of the machine and operated by a hand lever 2% connected to the plunger at 25 and to the frame at 26. Through these connections the wipers receive a combined advancing and closing movement relatively to the shoe.
In accordance with the illustrated embodiment of this invention coiiperating metallic toe embracing plates 28 are secured to the under side of the wipers by a stud and cam slotconnection, shown as comprising cam slots 30 in the forward end of each of the wipers 6 and other cam slots 32 in the rear end of each of the toe embracing plates 28 into which project the respective shouldered studs 3%. These cam slots 30 and 82 are respectively concentric with the cam slots 16, 16 in the wiper carriers 8 and 9 so that the work engaging faces of the toe embracing plates 28 and the acting edge faces of the wipers 6 are maintained in parallel relation to each other during their relative movements. comparatively strong spring pressed plungers 36 located in a recess in the forward portion of each of the Wiper carriers 8 and'9 engage the heads of the studs mounted on the toe embracing plates and normally maintain the acting edge faces of the toe embracing plates 28, 28 substantially flush with the acting edge faces of the wipers and permit said toe embracing plates to retreat relatively to the wipers and against the resistance of said plungers during the advancing movement of the wipers. The toe embracing plates are never required to close inwardly over the bottom of the shoe and therefore their acting edge faces may advantageously be formed entirely with reference to the side faces of the last, both asto the longitudinal contour around the end of the toe and as to their shape in vertical section- In this latter respect they preferably present a vertically extended work engaging face of substantially greater height than it is practical to provide on the edge of the toe wipers and form a square corner with the bottom face of the wipers.
A further important function of the toe embracing plates resides in preventing the wipers from advancing over the shoe bottom a sufiicicnt distance to break down or otherwise damage the channel lip or rib on a welt inner-sole as frequently occurs when lasting a shoe in whica the upper materials require the application of more force to wipe them inwardly against the lip at one side or part of the toe than at the other side. The distance the wipers may advance over the shoe bottom is controlled by the cam slots 30 and the length of which determines the amount of relative movement between the wipers and the toe embracing plates, which is preferably equal to the width of the feather of the innersole.

The presence of heat in the wipers and in the toe embracing plates increases the effectiveness of their action upon the upper material.
Tn the use of the invention as embodied in the described construction, the toe embracing plates are advanced into position to embrace the toe portion of the shoe simultaneously with the advance of the wipers and the plates cooperate with the wipers in rubbing or wiping the upper up the side faces of the last. By reason of the fact that the toe embracing plates present a substantially wide acting face as compared with the thin acting edges of the wipers and that they are also in heated condition their action on the upper is much more effective than constructions heretofore proposed and enables the upper-to be conformed to the last more smoothly and with greater precision. When the wipers have reached a position substantially flush with the surface of the shoe bot-tom and begin to close the toe embracing plates automatically clamp and hold the tensioned upper against the side faces of the last so that no tension on the upper is lost during the change of direction of the wiper movement and through the yielding connections of the plates 28 with the wipers the holding upper shaping pressure of the plate is increased as the wipers are advanced in a horizontal plane to wipe the upper over the feather and against the channel lip on the innersole. The wipers may be backed away from the lip on the innersole and then advanced repeatedly if necessary while the plates 28 continue to hold the messes upper clamped to the sidefaces of the last so that it cannot slack back.

Having described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States V 1. In a lasting machine, the combination with end embracing wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of end embracing plates located under said wipers and having a similar edge contour to that of the wipers, and means connecting said plates and said wipers, said connecting means permitting relative movement between the wipers and plates and normally maintaining the acting edge faces of the embracing plates substantially parallel to the acting edge faces of the wipers.
2. In a lasting machine, the combination with end wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of end embracing plates secured to said wipers, and means guiding and directing relative movement between said wipers and said plates in paths which maintain the edges of the plates substantially parallel with the acting edges of the wipers.
3. In a lasting machine, the combination with end wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of end embracing plates secured to said wipers and movable relatively thereto, means for directing such movement, and means for yieldingly resisting such relative movement and causing said plates to clamp the upper against the side faces of the last yieldingly while permitting the wipers to be advanced a predetermined distance over the shoe bottom.

In a machine of the class described, end lasting mechanism comprising; two sets of toe embracing plates mounted and guided for similar advancing and turning movements to embrace a shoe end, a single operating means for said plates, and a connection between said plates for permitting one of said sets of plates to be advanced over the shoe bottom while the other of said sets of plates acts to clamp the upper yieldingly against the last.
7. In a machine of the class described,

In a lasting machine, the combination with end wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of end embracing plates located directly beneath the wipers and having relatively wide acting edges of a contour similar to that of the wipers, a stud and slot connection permitting relative movement between said wipers and said plates, and spring pressed plungers for maintaining the acting edges of the plates normally flush with the acting edges ofthe wipers.
9. In a. lasting machine, the combination with too wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of metallic toe embracing plates secured to the underside of said wipers and movable relatively thereto, means for heating said plates, and means to limit the relative movement of the wipers and the plates and cause the plates to control the distance which the wipers may be ad nc d. over the hoe ottom.
10. In a lasting machine, the combination with end wipers and operating means for advancing and closing the Wipers to lay an upper over an innersole; of metallic end embracing plates located under said Wipers and having a relatively Wide acting face of a similar contour to that of the Wipers,
means connecting said plates and said down across the innersole and press the upper against the side face of the last While Gopies of this patent may be obtained for the Wipers advance and close over the shce bottom, and yielding means against the re sistance of which relative movement of the Wipers and said plates can take place for said overwiping operation.
12. In a machine of the class described, end lasting mechanism comprising two sets of toe embracing plates having similarly shaped acting edges formed and arranged to embrace the toe of a shoe, a single operating means for advancing and closing both sets of said plates, and a connection between said plates for causing the loWer set of plates to clamp the upper yieldingly against the side face of the last While advancing and closing the upper set of plates over the shoe bottom.
