Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 20, 1916.
Application filed February 14, 1916 7 Serial N 0. 78,207.
- vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 'to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to a lid or cover fastener more particularly designed for use in connection with caskets.
One object of the invention isto provide an improved means for fastening the lid member or cover of a casket to the body or receptacle member.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a means for properly positioning a detachable lid member of a casket to the receptacle member thereof-in order that the fastening devices may be brought into proper engagement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, efficient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
In the accompanying drawings in which similar reference characters designate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a casket construct- \ed in accordance with this invention, showing the lid member in raised position; Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the same showing the fastening means at the side of the casket; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the fastening means at the other side thereof; Fig. 4 is a fragmental transverse sectional View through a portion of the casket showing the lid member in its raised position, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated, a casket is shown comprising a body or receptacle member 1, and a lid member 2. It is very desirable to provide detachable connections for securing the lid member 2 to the receptacle member 1, and to this end plates 3 are secured to the upper edge of'one of the sides of the receptacle member 1 by suitable screws 4. The inner end of these plates 3 are bent downwardly at right angles as at 5 and secured to the inner face of the side by screws 6. The upper edge and inner face of the side of the receptacle member is notched .out to receive the plates 3 and downwardly extended portions 5, whereby the outer faces of the latter are fiush with the former. The other or outer ends of the plates 3 are extended beyond the plane of the outer face of theside to provide extensions 7, the latter having rectangular slots 8 therein for engagement with tongues 9 which extend angularly from plates 10 secured to the interior side of the lid member 2 near one edge thereof.
The tongues 9 and slotted extensions of the plates 10 form in effect separable hinges which are locked when the lid member 2 is in closed position. When the lid member 2 is in raised position the hinges may be separated, or as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings it may be supported in an upright position the tongues 9 engaging the outer face of the side of the receptacle member 1. The plates 10 similar to the plates 8 are disposed in notches and lie flush with the interior face of the lid member 2.
Secured in a notch in the upper edge in the other side of the receptacle member 1 by a suitable screw 11 is a plate 12, from the outer end of which extends a tongue 13, the latter being bent slightly downward for a purpose to be described. The inner end of the plate 12 is bent downwardly at right angles and then inwardly, and this inwardly extended offset portion 14 is provided with a rectangular opening 15 thereby forming an eye for the reception of a tongue 16 which extends downward from the lid member2, said tongue and eye comprising in effect guide members. The tongue 16 is tapered from its fixed to its free end in order to properly position the lid member both longitudinally and'laterally relative to the receptacle member when it is brought into engagement with the'aforesaid eye by the lowering of the lid member 2. When this lid member is lowered the tongue 13 is engaged by the hooked end 17 of a resilient fastener 18, the other end of which is secured in a notch in the interior face of the lid member 2 by a suitable screw 19.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it may be seen that the objects of the invention have been effectively carried out. How ever, it is to be understood .that the drawings are merely illustrative of the principle of the invention, and as various minor changes in form and proportion may be resorted to, I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim asmy invention:
1. A device adapted to be used in con-' nection with the body member and swinging lid member-0f a receptacle,.comprisingaresilient fastener having means for attachment to oneof the members,.a tongue :hLV- ing means for attachment to theothermember for engagement with said fastenenxan additional tongue adapted to be attached to one of the members, and an eye adapted to be attached to the other member for receiving said additional tongue, whereby to position said fastener for engagement with the first-mentioned tongue.
2. A device adapted to be .used invconnection with the body member and swinging copies of this patent may be vobtained for to the *lid member, a plate adapted to be attached to the edge of one of the sides of the :body member and having a tongue extending outwardly from the outer for engagement w1th said fastener, the 1nend thereof nerend of said plate being offset and provided with a rectangular opening, and an additional tongue having means for attachment .to the .lid member, said additional tongue being tapered toward its free end for engagement with said opening, whereby to positioncsaid fastener for engagementwith the first-mentioned tongue. V
In testimony whereof .I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
