:Be it knownithat I, J osnrn FnA-x,:a-citizen of the Uni-tedrStates, residing at'Chicago, inathe-county .of Cookaand Stateof Illinois, h-ave'inventedcertainmew and useful Improvements in :Safety Devices for Gas-Burners; .and I do :hereby declare the following' to bea full, clear,; andiexact description of'the inventiomssuchas will en- "able :othersskilled in :the art to which it the provision of a simple and 'efficient gas valve locking device which will operate-lautomatically to prevent the turning of the operating handle of a gas burner and yet permit of a ready and convenient releasing of the look when the valve is to be turned.
\Vhile in this application I show and describe the invention as applied to a gas burner of ordinary construction, it will at once he noted that the device is adapted for use also with any of the various types of gas valves, such for instance as are used in connection with gas ranges in which a series of gas inlets are provided and which, through the accidental turning of the gas cocks, result in the escape of gas.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gas valve embodying my invention, partly in section and with the cover plate removed. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the valve complete. Fig. 3 is a transverse section upon the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a side view partly in section showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken upon the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a section upon the line 6-6 of Fig. 4.

The .lower lends {of g said levers are extended outward and serve, when in engagement with the shoulders 9 upon 5 the opposite sides of the periphery of the sleeve 10 within which is seated the gas cock, to lock the valve against turning therein at a point at which the gas inlet is closed.
In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I have shown the preferred form of my device in which the two pivoted locking levers 5, 5 are shown disposed upon opposite sides of the valve, the said levers being shown as nearly held thrown outward by the spring 12, 12, which spring is bent at its center and passed over a transverse bolt 13, the lower free ends of the spring bearing against the inner faces of the locking levers at the lower ends thereof. The plunger 3 has secured at its lower end a triangular member 14 which, when a downward pressure is applied to the plunger 3, enters between the inclined walls 15 of the upper ends of the pivoted locking levers 5, forcing the upper ends of said levers outward and withdrawing the lower locking ends of the levers from their locking position and permitting the valve to be turned against the action of the spring 12. The releasing of pressure upon the plunger will, through the medium of said spring, return the levers to their locking position.
p In Fig. 2 of the drawings, I have shown a removable cover plate 16 which may be removed when access to the mechanism conmovement of a plunger 3 located within a chamber provided in the operating handle of the valve, the inward pressure upon which plunger will cause the locking lever to be tilted so as to force the curved lower end outward out of the path of the lug 9, thus releasing the lock and permitting the valve to be turned, the return of the plunger to its normal or locked position being automatically effected through the medium of the spring 11 seated within the chamber at the inner end of the plug.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be at once readily understood. It will be noted that the looking mechanism described is automatic in its operation and will serve to normally hold the valve in its locked position, thus preventing the escape of gas until the turning plug is operated. It will be noted that in operating the turning plug, it is necessary to release the locking member by means of the plunger controlling the same, the plunger being depressed against the action of the spring controlling it, the action of which spring will normally return the valve to its locked position upon the release of pressure upon the plunger.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an automatic locking device for gas cocks, the combination with the gas valve, of pivoted locking members, the lower ends of which are adapted to be thrown outward into locking position upon opposite sides of the cock by the action of a spring interposed between said locking members, a plunger positioned above the upper ends of the locking members and carrying an angular projection adapted, upon the depression of the plunger, to separate the upper ends of the pivoted locking members against the action of the spring and release the same from their locking positions, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH FLAX.
