Application filed'November 2, 1915. Serial No. 59,236.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD Foo- CART, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVilliamsport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in tools, more particularly adaptable to use with rotary cutter heads, and the object is to apply the invention to the board or strip which is to be fed to the cutter head for the purpose of feeding the board to and holding it in position on the 'knives or blades of the cutter head.
lVith this invention the operators hands will be protected and there will be no danger of the hand slipping from the board and passing between the knives and thereby causing the hand to be severely cut and perhaps severed at the wrist.
The invention consists of a plate having teeth located at one terminal which are pressed into the board, and at the other or forward terminal an adjustable stud or pin is provided which is adapted to be forced into the upper surface of the board. A handle is applied to the plate which is grasped by the operator for holding the plate in engagement with the board, and for feeding the board to the cutter head, the teeth and pin forming a means for holding the tool in place.
The invention consists of certain novel.
features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
A represents metal plate liavmg one terminal provided with a plurality of teeth arranged transversely thereof, which project downwardly and forwardly at a slight incline, as indicated at 1.
A handle 2 has one end thereof connected to and near the rear end of the plate A, by a rivet 8, and the forward end of the handle is flared outwardly and forwardly at right angles and rests upon the plate near the forward end thereof. The right angular portion 4 of the handle 2 is connected to the plate by means of a rivet 5. A pin or stud 6 is provided with a screw-threaded shank, which has screw-threaded engagement w th the forwardly projecting portion 4 of the handle. An opening 7 is formed in the plate A, which registers with the screwthreaded opening 8 formed in the portion 4. of the handle 2. The inner end of the pin or stud 6 is pointed or sharpened and is adapted to project through the opening 7 of the plate A, so that the pin or stud may be forced or pressed into the board to be operated on. The pin or stud has a slotted head 9 so that a tool, such as a screw-driver, may be applied thereto for adjusting the position of the pin or stud to regulate the penetration of the pin or stud into the board. A- nut 10 is screwed upon the pin or stud 6 and against the upper surface of the forwardly projecting portion of the handle for locking the pin or stud in its adjusted position.
The teeth 1 and pin 6 are forced or pressed into engagement with the board by the operator, and as the operator in feeding the board to the cutter head maintains a grip upon the handle 2, the teeth and pinare held in engagement with the board. When the board is fed to the cutter head the operator instead of grasping the board with his hands will simply grasp and hold the handle 2 of the tool, and in this manner feed the board to the cutter head. The teeth 1 will insure the feed of the board in a forward direction, and the pin 6 will prevent the tool from moving laterally. so that the operator can manipulate the board, to cause it to be fed to the cutter head as he desires, by simply holding the handle 2 of the tool.
It will be seen from the foregoing that with an invention of this character the danger of the hand slipping between the blades of the cutter head is eliminated, and even if it should happen that the tool should become disengaged from the board, the tool and not the hand would pass between the blades.
I claim 1. A tool for feeding boards to cutter heads, comprising a plate having teeth located at one end and a pin at the other end, means for 'adjustably supporting the pin on the plate, said teeth and pin being adapted to engage the board, and a handle connected to the plate and located on the plate above the teeth and pin for holding the plate in position on the board and for feeding the board.
2, A tool for feeding boards to cutter heads, comprising a plate having integral teeth at the rear terminal thereof which extend downwardly and forwardly for engaging the board to be operated-on, said plate having an opening formed therein at the forward end, an adjustable pin supported on the plate and projecting through the opening for engaging the board, and a handle connected to the plate for holding the plate in position and for feeding the board.
3. A tool for feeding boards to cutter heads, comprising a plate having integral teeth at the rear terminal thereof which extend downwardly and forwardly for engaging the board to be operated on, said plate having an opening formed therein at the forward end, a handle connected to the plate and provided with a screw-threaded opening at its forward end, a pin having screwthreaded engagement with the handle and projecting through the opening of the plate, said pin having the end which projects through the plate sharpened so that it may be pressed into engagement with the board, and a nut on the pin adapted to engage the handle for locking the pin against movement.
