Description

J. W. MORELAND.
BOX FASTENER- APPLICATION FILED JAN- 29. I916.-
l 1 @NMU'? v I Patented June 20, 1916.
- wuamhw J- W- MORELHND JAMES W. IVEORELAND, OF GREENLAND, WEST VIRGINIA.
BOX-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jaime Moun- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenland, in the county of Grant and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain-improvements in box fasteners and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in sending articles through'the mails, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved fastener for detaehably securing a box cover in place.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a fastener of this general character which may be conveniently applied in operative position and which serves to securely retain the box lid in place, but which also permits the fastener to be readily released for removing the lid when the circumstances require.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved fastener whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective illustrating a box having applied thereto fas teners constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective, detached, of one of the members employed in my fastener as herein embodied; and Fig. 3 is a view in perspec tive, detached, of the second member as embodied, in my improved fastener, as herein disclosed.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a box composed of paper or other material and of any preferred form and having a cover 2 provided with the depending flanges 3 adapted to seat down- Specificativn of Letters Patent Patented June 20, 1916.
- Application filed January 29, 1916.
Serial No. 75,071.
ward on thebox, as usual, in devices of this character.
As herein embodied, I employ in connection with the side walls of the box 1 and the flanges 3 of the cover 2, the fastening members F, preferably at the ends of the box and at the sides thereof midway their lengths. As in each instance the construction of the fastening devices F are identical, it is thought that the description of one will suflice for the purposes of disclosure.
As herein disclosed, l denotes a plate preferably rectangular in form and having its lower (ma portion provided with the transversely spaced pointed prongs 5, preferably positioned immediately adjacent the vertical sides of the plate 1. The prongs 5 are adapted to be flexed inwardly and then forced through a wall of the box and then turned upwardly whereby it will be perceived that the plate 4 is conveniently and effectively clamped to the wall of the box. The upper portion of the plate 4 is provided with the longitudinally spaced trans versely directed slots 6 through which the depending elongated tongue 7 of the plate 8 is adapted to be directed, said plate 8 being provided at its upper marginal portion with the transversely spaced pointed prongs 9 adapted to be forced through a flange 3 of the cover 2 and then bent downwardly in order to anchor the plate 8 to the flange. It is to be observed that the portion of the plate 4 intermediate the slots 6 is offset in order to expedite the insertion of the tongue 7 through the slots 6. The prongs 9 are also preferably positioned immediately adjacent the opposite sides of the plate 8. It is also to be observed that the tongue 7 is of such a length as to extend below the lowermost slot 6 so that said tongue may be returned as indicated at 10,
.in order to assure an effective locking communication between the plates 41 and 8.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material depar- I ture from the principles and spirit thereof and'for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement andformation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice. I
I claim; In combination with a container and a cover therefor provided with a flange overlying a Wall of the container, a fastening means coacting with the cover and container comprising two plates, each of saidplates' being rectangular in form, one of said plates overlying the flange of the cover and having 7 its upper corners provided with prongs penetrating the flange, the lower portion of the plate being provided with a bendable tongue, the second plate having its lower Copies-of thlapaten-t may be obtained for nesses.
