PUMlP-COU-PLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed August 4, 1915. Serial No. 43,532.
To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, GILBERT S. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing at J Ellis, in the county of Gage, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Pump-Couplings; and
' I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such. as .will enable others skilled 1c ''in the art to which it appertains to make and use. the same. The present invention 15 d1rected.to 1m- 'provements in couplers for pump rods, and
has for its object to so construct a deviceof this character that the pump rod of-a wind-mill and piston rod of a pump can be With these and, other objects in view, this invention. resides-in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described,- claimed and illustrated, in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 :is a side elevation of: the device.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4
is a sectional view on line- P4 of Fig; 1. Referring to the drawing '1 indicates a plate, the lower end of which isformed: with an enlargement 2, 'said enlargement being pro'videdwith spaced ears 3 which are provided with bearings 4, the purpose of which will appear laten, The enlargement has a rectangular opening 5 formed therein for jre ceiving the pump pistonro'd 6, the upper end of which passes through said opening nd rests flush against the late 1, andb tween the flanges-7 carried t ereby, said-rod having perforations formed therein for. en gagement by the arm 8 of the' U-bolt 9'. .The arm 10 of the bolt 9 slidably engages-the bearings 4 formed in the ears 3,.and is encircled by coil spring 11, which has one end engaged with one of the ears and the other on xedto the arm in an} suitable manner, said spring serving-to retract the bolt .30 that the arm 8 thereof will bridge the opening 5 when engaged with the piston rod- 6.
A resilient pawl 12 is supported by one.
of the'ears 3 and isadapted to engage a notch 13 formed in the arm ll'of the bolt 9, and when engaged with said notch it will be noted that the arm 8 of said bolt will be disengaged from-the pump rod"so that the same can be readily removed. 'When it is desired to attach the pump ,r'od it isohly necessary to actuate the pawl to disengage the notch, whereupon the ispring 11 will cause the bolt 9 to move inwardly, whereby the arm 8 thereof will engage the rod.
Formediintegral with the plate I is a guide-14 in which slid'esa rod 15, the upperend of which is provided with a flanged plate ,16,'and to which is attached the lower end of the-wind-mill pump rod 17. .The' lower end of the rod 15 is formed 'with a reduced portion 18' which slidably engages the bore 19' formed in the enlargementQ. A nut 20 is threaded on the rod.l5,'and -isengaged by the lower end of the coil' spr ing 21, whiehencirclesthe rod, and has its-up per end engaged with the guide .14: A boil r 22 is engaged upon the rod 15 and is engaged by the upperend of the coil spring 23, the lower end of which engages the guide 14. The spring 23 encircles the rod.
By providing. the. springs 21"and 925 111 is obvious that jars occasioned, by reciprocation' of'the wind-mill rod andpump piston rod will be absorbed, thus'preventing injury to said rods, but at the same time permits the rods to reciprocate to perform their functions.
The pump ,piston rod 6 is provided with a reduced, extension 24, and has adjusts-lily mounted thereon a collar 25'. Having its upper edge engaged with the collar 25' is a coilspring 26, which encircles the extension 24, and has its lower end engaged with the pump eylinder 27, said spring serving to absorb-the jarlincident to the reciprocation oi the pump piston rod.
What is claimed-isl 4 A coupling of the class Tdescribed' consist ing o'f a platehavi'ng an enlargement upon 'its lower end, and bearings carried by the enlargement, a pump rod, said enlargement having an opening formed therein ,for en gaging the'pump a U-bolt having one arm slidably enga ed. in-thebearings and the other in the en arger'ncnt, a. spring carried by one of the arms tor holding the other "arm engaged with thepump rod', said plate being further provided "with a guide, In testimony whereof, I aflix a rod slidably engaged with the guide, coil ture, in the p springs encircling the rod on *opposite sides i of the guide and serving to yieldably cOn- Witnesses: 5 nect the rod to the plate, and means carried R. R. HIGHLAND, by the rod for engaging a wind-mill rod. L. C. BARNES.
my signaresence of two wltnesses.
GILBERT COOK.
