Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 191 6.
Application led October 21, 1915. Serial No. 57,150.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JnssE A. L. HEFNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Landisburg, in the county of F ayette and State of Vest Virginia, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. u
This invention relates to a stove-plpe joint and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient means for connecting the interlocking ends of sections of a stove-pipe in such a manner as to prevent the same from being accidentally disassembled.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient stovepipe section which may be sold in blank form and afterward connected in an eiicient manner for holding the pipe in its circular formation.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of severa-l sections of the stove-pipe connected together. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section through one of the joints of the stove-pipe, showing the manner in which the locking tongues are adapted to be clenched upon the pipe. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal section taken through the longitudinal joint of the pipe section. Fig. 6 is a view of the inner face of a portion of a stove-pipe, showing the clamping lip adapted to hold the longitudinal joint against eX- pansible movement. Fig. 7 is a detailed perspective of the clamping tongue, showing one of the locking tongues, prior to being bent. Fig. 8 is a plan View of one end of a blank from which the stove-pipe section is formed. Fig. 9 is a section taken on line 9 9 of Fig. l. Fig. 10 is a detailed perspective of the end of one of the sections showing the manner in which the longitudinal seam is adapted to be joined together.
By referring to the drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the primary section of the pipe into which is adapted to be interlocked the auxiliary section 2 of the pipe. Each of these sections 1 and 2 is similarly constructed as will be obvious from the following description.
When making the pipo sections, the entire sections are stamped in one piece of sheet metal and one side thereof is provided with a Harige 2 which is adapted to be folded back under the body of the pipe section for constituting an interlocking joint with the flange 3 formed on the op yiosite side of the saine section, as illustrated clearly in Fig. 9 of the drawings. Each end of the pipe sections iS provided with a projecting lip 4 at one end, having a notch 5 formed adjacent thereto upon the edge of the pipe section.
The opposite side of the pipe section is provided with a projecting lip 6 and a locking lip 7 is also formed on the opposite side of the pipe section in spaced relation to the lip G as illustrated clearly in Fig. 8. It will therefore be seen that as the flanges 2 and 3 are interlocked, as shown in Fig. 9, the lip portion 7 may be bent down so as to interlock or overhang the notched portion 5 and thereby firmly clamp the sections of the pipe against expansible movement, the movement in one direction being limited by the shoulder 8 and being limited in the opposite direction by means of the projecting lip 4. The longitudinal movement of the abutting ends will of course be limited by the tongues or lips 7 being bent or folded under the pipe section as clearly illustrated in F ig. 2 of the drawings.
Each sheet metal pipe section blank is provided with a projecting flange 10 adapted to be folded inwardly upon the edge of the pipe section, which iiange 1() is provided with Vshaped cut portions 11 as illustrated clearly in Fig. 8 to facilitate the inward bending of the flange portions 10.
The iange portion 10 is adapted to be folded along the dotted line 12 to the position shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The fiange portion 10 is also provided with a plurality of spaced slots 13 and the body portion of each section is also provided with transverse slots 14 arranged in the rear of the slots 13.
The section 2 is provided with a plurality of punched-out portions 15 and these punched-out portions 15 are arranged upon the section 2 in such a manner as to conveniently slip through the slots 13 and 14.
Attention is especially called to Fig. 3 of the drawings in connection with that structure just` described for it will be seen that when the pipe is assembled the tongue portion 15 is passed through the elongated slot 13 and is then passed between the flange portion and the outer portion of the body of the will pass out through the aperture 14k formed in the body of the pipe. The outer end of the tongue 15 is then bent or clenched backwardly upon the outer portion of the pipe as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings to prevent the outward movement of one section with respect to the other. The shoulder portions 16 will prevent the movement of the pipe in one longitudinal direction, whereas the clenched end 17 will prevent the longitudinal movement or' the pipe in the opposite direction. lt will further be seen that each section of the pipe is provided with a beaded portion 18, which beaded portion 18 is adapted to abut against the end 19 of the adjacent section and also assist in the limiting of the inward movement of one pipe section with respect to the other pipe section.
It of course should be understood that the edges of the apertures 13 and 14 are so Gopies of this patent may be obtained for pipe, whereupon the tongue arranged as to permit the convenient sliding of the tongues 15 through the respective apertures 13 and 14.-.
lVhat I claim is A pipe joint comprising a plurality of inter-locking pipe sections, the end of one section adapted to fit in the end of the adjacent section, one of said sections provided with an inwardly folded flange extending along the inner face of one end of one of said sections, said flange provided With elongated apertures formed therein, the body of said section carrying said flange provided with elongated apertures, the apertures formed in said lange being placed in advance of the apertures formed in said body, the other section ol' said pipe provided with projecting tongues passing through said elongated apertures formed in said v[lange and body and being bent backwardly .for clenching said tongues and holding said sections in an assembled position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
