Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented May 23, 1916.
Application filed October 2, 1915. Serial Ito. 53,813.
To all whom it may concern a citizen of the United States, residing at Jennie, in the county of Chicot and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to hat pins, scarf pins and the like, and it has for its object to produce a device of the class described in which the point will not protrude in an objectionable and dangerous manner when the pin is being used in its customary manner.
A further object of the invention is to produce a pin having a pointed penetrating member movably connected therewith and adapted to be moved to an obstructing position when the pin is being used so as .to prevent the accidental withdrawal or loss of the pin. p
A further object of the invention is to produce a pin possessing the aforesaid characteristics, the same being of simple and improved construction.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better-understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood, that no limitation is necessarily made to the preoise'structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat pin constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the pin as seen at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3.3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a viewsimilar to Fig. 2, but showing the penetrating member disposed at right angles to the shank orbody of the pin to prevent withdrawal of the latter. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view. showing the shank and the penetrating member separated.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The shank or body 15 of the improved pinhas at one end thereof a longitudinal recess16 to receive a tongue 17 extending from the point or penetrating member 18. The tongue 17 has a. longitudinal slot 19 for the passage of a fastening member, such as a r1vet 20, extending transversely through the shank of the pin at the recessed end thereof. The tongue 17 has at its inner end a projecting lip or looking member 21 for the accommodation of which a notch 22 is provided at the inner end of the recess 16.
It will be seen that when the parts are assembled, the slot 19 permits the penetrating member to be moved longitudinally to enable the lip 21 to be engaged with the notch 22, thereby preventing the penetrating member from being moved or rotated about the axis of the rivet 20. By slightly retractingthe penetrating member longitudinally-with respect to the shank 15 it maybe swung or moved to a position substantially at right angles to said shank, as will be. seen in Fig. 4, thereby preventing the withdrawal of the pin.
If desired, a small coiled spring 23 may be placed in the slot 19 betweenthe inner end of said slot and the rivet 20 to exert an inward tension on the penetratin member, whereby the lip 21 will be retalned in engagement with the notch 22.
The contactingportions of the shank 15 and the penetrating member 18 are referably rounded, as ndicated at 24, or the double purpose of assisting in retaining the parts in position with the penetrating mem ber extending in alinement with the shank of the pin and also facilitating the operation of moving it to a position substantially at right angles to the shank. I
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a device of the class described, a shank having at one end a longitudinal recess pro vided with a notch at its inner end, a penetrating member having a tongue engaglng said recess, said tongue being provided with through the slotted tongue, the contacting In testimony whereof I aflix my signature portions of the shank and the penetrating in presence of two witnesses. member being rounded to present arcuate meeting faces; in combination'with a spring WALTER STEWART 5 fitted in the slot of the tongue between the Witnesses:
fastening member and the inner nd wall of K. LUCAS,
