proper performance of telephonic and vari-- ous. signaling and switch-operating functions by means of controlling circuits extending over the two wires of each trunk.
In the system herein disclosed to illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention,
'there is provided a supervisory signal and means for controlling it over a signaling circuit extending through one of the two trunk wires, also an automatic ringing mechanism, with means for controlling its operation over a second signaling circuit extendingover the other of the two trunk wires, for the purpose'of reringing on the called subscribers line. In combination with these there is further provided a switch restoring magnet with means to operate it under the joint control of both of the signaling circuits. The two signaling circuits are preferably closed during the time the trunk is in use as atelephonic link between subscriber s stations. Under this condition of the apparatus the supervisory signal located, say at an operators position at the end of the trunk nearest the calling line, is operated by opening one of the signaling circuits at the switch end of the trunk. Two subscribers stations 1 and 2 are shown connected by way of contacts 3, 4 of a spring-jack and plug-switch 5, contacts 6, 7 of an automatic switch, two wires 8, 9 of a two-wire interoflice trunk and contacts 10, 11' of another automatic switch. The connecting link between the contacts 3, 4,- and 6, '4' may be divided, as usual, by repeating coil windings 12, 13 and 14, 15 into inductive sections, and the trunk likewise by repeating coil windings 16, 1'7 and 18, 19.
Current is supplied to the calling line and to the trunk by a battery B 20, and toithe called line by a battery B 21. A condenser '22, intermediate the windings 16, 17 makes the calling line section of the trunk a closed telephonic link;
An automatic ringing mechanism, which may be of any desired construction, com prises, asshown, three relays 23, 24 and 25, a ringing generator 26. and a starting switch 27. The closure of tlin starting switch may be caused, as in automatic systems, to follow immediately after the establishment ofa connection with and test of a Wanted idle line. A supervisory relay 39 new acts, closing at contact 40 a signaling circuit over wire 9 of the two-wire trunk, as follows: B 20, 15, 41, 42, 7, 9, 43, 44, 17, 45, 46, 40, G.
. This circuit includes several contacts, the
v function of which will be stated hereinafter,
an impedance coil which avoids a direct ground connection to the telephonic link,
and a supervisory relay 41 which acts to shunt a supervisory lamp signal 47. Thisif forany reason it is desired to rering the called party, the operator may reestablish the active condition of the ringing mechanism by momentarily depressing the rering key49. Prior to this, there had existed a closed signaling circuit-through the trunk wire 8, as follows: B 21, 50, 51, 52, 53, 16, 8, 6, 54, 55, 14, G; also a second local circuit: G, 56,57, 31, 32, 33, B 21; and a third local. circuit: G, 58, 59, 60, 61, B 21.

Contact 62 makes before contact 60 breaks, so that relay 59 will remain energized provided it finds a substitute path for battery current over the trunk wire'9, which it does under the present assumption, the

the original 'od'ul ringing circuit, causing the ringing relay 23, to again apply rlnging current to the called line. If and when the subscriber again responds, relays 24,25 and 23 messes act as before, cutting ofi the ringing current. The operation of reringing may be repeated as often as required.
Assume now that the lines are ready to be discontinued. This, in the semi-auto-- matic system disclosed, is a condition usually brought about by both parties having replaced their receivers, and'both superviof the calling line This breaks a local cir-' cuit which included a cord relay 64 and a cut-o3 relay 65. The former reacts, opening at 66 a-contact in the calling line super visorysignal circuit, and closing at 67 a circuit for relay 68, which in turn closes at contact the motor magnet circuit of a sequence switch 69. The function of the sequence switch is to control various circuits in a particular manner, and thus to bring about a desired sequence of operations. At the time ofthe closure of the last-mentioned circuit, the sequence switch 69 was resting in talking position, say position 16, and it is now moved to the switch return position 18, wherein there is closed at contact 70 a circuit for he restoring magnet 71, the function of wh ch is to return to normal the automatic switch which had previously established the connections at contacts 6 and 7 between the connecting link and trunk.
Inits movement from position 16 to 18 the sequence switch 69 opened contacts 72, 73, 74 and 75 in various local circuits, and contacts 54 and 42 in the trunk signaling circuits. 'lhereupon relays 53, 25 and 57 react as before, and relay 59 is again connected at contact 62 to the trunk wire 9. In this instance, however, the path for battery current is open at contact 42 so that relay 59 is not maintained energized, but reacts opening at 51 a contact in the signaling circuit over wire 8, and closing at contact T. the motor magnet circuit of a sequence switch 77. This sequence switch, like 69, had been resting in talking position, say 16, and it is now advanced to the return position 18, wherein at contact 78 there is closed the circuit of a nections at contacts 10 and 11 between the trunk and the called line. In its movement from position 16 to 18, the sequence switch 77 opened contacts 50, 58, 80, 52, 30, 31, 33
and 56 in various local circuits, contacts 43, 44 and 63 in the circuits of wire 9, and contacts 81 and 82 in the circuit to the called line. Master contacts 83 and 84 are closed between the various resting positions of the sequence switches. r

' In the particular system described it will be noted that two of the controlled devices namely the automatic ringing relay 23 and the switch restoring magnet ,79 are both dependent for their operation in the first instance upon the actuation of switch operating mechanism comprising tlie'relays 53 and 57, which respond, that is to say, react upon the opening of the trunk circuit over wire 8 and that the operation of the one or the other of these two devices is thereupon selcctively determined by the relay 59,which acts as a testing mechanism to determine the closed or open condition of the trunk circuit over wire 9.
What is claimed is:
1. In a telephone trunking system, two wires joined to form a telephonic link and separately forming controlling circuits, a supervis'ory signal under the control of one and ringing mechanism under the control of the other of said circuits, and a switch controlsaid circuits.
2. In an electricalcontrolling system, two
wires joined to form a telephonic link and separately forming signaling circuits, sig-' naling devices one at each end of said link controlled oversaid circuits respectively, and a switch controlling device controlled '3.In .a telephone trunking system, two wires joined to form a telephonic link' and separately forming closed controlling circuits, a ringing device operable upon the opening of one of said circuits alone, and a switch controlling device operable upon the opening of both said circuits.

8. In a telephone-trunking system, two wires extending parallelly between two points and-separately forming closed controlling circuits, a ringing device at one point, means for operating said device upon the momentary opening of one of said circuits. at the other point, a supervisory signal at-said otherpoint, means for operating said signal by opening the other of said circuits at the first mentioned point, a switchcontrolling magnet at the first mentioned point, and means for operating said magnet by opening both said circuits at the said other poin v 9. In a-telephone exchange system, the combination with a two-wire trunk, a called subscribers line, a switch connecting said trunk and line, a restoringdevice for said switch, and automatic ringing mechanism trolled over one wire of the trunk for reestablishing the active'condition of the ring- I 7 mg mechanism, and means co'htrolled over both wires of the trunk jointly for operating said restoring device.
10. In a telephohe exchange system, the combination with a two-wire trunk, a called subscibers line, a switch connecting said trunk and line, a restoring device for said switch, ringing mechanism associated with the ringing mechanism associated with the switch end of the trunk, and a supervisory signal associated with the other end of the trunk, of means. controlled over the sub scribers line and one wire of thetrunl; for operating the supervisory signal, means controlled over the other wire of the trunk for operating said ringing mechanism,- and means controlled over both wires of the trunk .for operating said restoring device.

In a telephone exchange system, two Wires joining to form a telephonic trunk and each forming an 1 independentcontrolling circuit, a signaling device at one' end of said trunk, a second signaling device and a switch-controllingmagnet at the other end of said trunk, a switch at the last mentioned end of the trunk adapted to open one of the controlling circuits to operate the first mentioned signaling device,
a switch at the first mentioned end of the vice, a switch at the said first mentioned end masses of the trunk adapted to open the first men- .tioned controlling circuit, and means con ing between said points and each forming a closed controlling circuit, means for operating one of the first mentioned devices by momentarily opening one of said controlling circuits, means'ior operating the said third device by opening the other of said controlling circuits, and means for operating the other of the said first mentioned devices by opening both said controlling circuits.
15. A controlling system comprising two devices at one point to be controlled from a distant point, two closed circuits extending between said points, means at the dis-'- tant point for opening one or both of said circuits atwill, switch operating mechanism at the first mentioned point responsive to the opening of one of said circuits, a testing mechanism adapted upon the actuation of said switch operating mechanism when said circuit is opened to test the condition of the other circuit, the operation of the two devices both being dependent upon the actuation of said switch operating mechanism but selectively determined by said testing mechillllfilll.
16. In a telephone exchange, the combination with a system of circuits between lines includinga two-wire trunk, and an automatic ringing apparatus and a switch restoring device at the incoming end and a supervisory signaling device at the outgoing end of said trunk. of means controlled over said trunk for resorting the automatic ringing apparatus. means. .controlled over said trunk for operating said switch restoring device, and means controlled over said trunk "for operating said supervisory signaling device, the control of said automatic ringing apparatus and said supervisory signaling device being effected without interfcrence with the control of said switch restoring device.
