Y removal of the pins Be it known that I, LEVI M. BowMAN, citizen o f the United States, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented new and useful 1mprovements in Pin-Holders, of which the lfollowing is a specification.
This invention has for an object to simplify the manufacture of a casing and mechanism for dispensing pins, whereby the device will be salable at a priceV which will bring ity within the range of popular demand. i
A further object is to provide a novel-construction of container for a roll of pins ,and the Apaper from which pins have beenk removed and a guide means for presenting. the pins for removal. n

There is illustrated a' rectangular base 10 pressed from sheet metal,of oblong form, including atop 11 and inclined sides 12. The base is oblong in plan, and set thereon there is a casing 13 formed of one strip of sheet metal bent to form two circular receptacles 14 and l'adjacent respective ends of the base, and a connecting passage 16 The lower edge of the strip is secured in any customary manner to the base 10, being iianged on the inside and soldered, as shown. passage 16Vis held with itssides in proper relative position by means of two rivets 17 located adjacent the top and bottom of the casing respectively, and which in addition serve to perform functions to be vsubsequently explained. The casing is closed over the receptacles by means of respective covers or caps 18, having flanges 19 on their under sides fitting snugly within the sides of the receptacles, the flanges being interrupted in registry with the passage 16, the abutting ends ofthe anges being curved outward to-tiin the beginning of the passage adjacent each, the sides of the casing being curved gradually outward from the arc of the major part of the receptacles and converging gradually to form the passage 16. j The covers have each a flange 21 projecting beyond thesides of the casing wherebyit may be kreadily lifted. On topV of the covers there Y are provided circular pin cushions, 18', for which the shapey of the device isy V.particularly adapted, although they arenot an essential element of theinvention.V The base 10 is extended farther Vin front of the casing 10 than behind, and a vsmall tray 22 maybe formed therein, in which loose pins may be disposed. The tray as shown has theV central portion cut away as at 23, on each side of whichopening flanges 24 are turned upwardly having alined notches in which pins 25 may be laid.
`The sides of the casing directly above the rivets 17 have alined notches 26 therein, of a size suitable to conform to the end of a finger tip approximately. Mounted for rotation concentrically of the receptacle 14: lthere is a spindle 27, having at its lower part close to the top of the base 10 a disk 28. Similarly mounted inthe opposite receptacle. there is a winding drum 29, comprising a block of cylindrical form having a slot 30 extending throughout its length and inclined opposite the direction in which as will be described. The drumy is carried on a shaft 31 projected beneath the base andk provided with a gear 32 xed thereon close against the under side of the base. carried by the base, the large wheel 40 'of which is meshed with the gear 32. N othingy holds the drum against rotation `under action ofthe spring except the pin paper, as will be described, and nothing interposes Vto check rotation of thev gear train.
The pins are obtained IiXed transversely in a paper ribbon 41, woundv spirally upon itself, and in charging the device the rollof pins is presented in the receptacle 14 with the points downward, the spindle 27 being engaged'through the center of the roll. The outer end of the kribbon ystrip should be previously fed through the passage 16 between the rivets 17 YVfrom the `receptacle 14 to 'theone l5, in the latter'of which its extremity` is inserted in the slot of the drum andtheflatter rotated suliiciently to take up some of the ribbon, ory at least to turn the part engaged inthe slot atA a considerable angleto that without the slot. The roll containing the pins being in place on the spindle and disk 27 and 28, and the covers 18 being engaged `in the receptacles the device may be inverted-'and the key v34 operated to put the spring`38 under suiiicient tension. This will result in Winding up all of the outer end portion of the ribbon 41 containing no pins until the first of the pins in the package is drawn into the passage 16.. The ribbon is of such breadth that the pins project beyond each edge, and the rivetsk are spaced, the lower so as to support and guide the ribbon horizontally,"and the upper one a short distance above the ribbon. 'The projecting portions of the outermost pin of the roll are thus brought into engagement with the respective rivets under rotation of the drum 29, and these rivets being located on a vertical line adjacent or slightly beyond the axis of the notches 26, which extend some distance below the levelof the pin-heads, the head ofthe first pin is presented centrally of the notches inthe most convenient position for extracting. The gear train and drum being otherwise free to rotate andthe spring 38 being under constant tension, tending to wind the drum, the removal ofthe outermost pin will always result in releasing the ribbon and movement of the ribbon until the succeedingv pin is brought against'the rivets 17in turn.

The particular form of base'described is not essential of course, and if desired may be made only large enough to close the lower ends 14 and 15. In the latter case ther bottom element may be ,spaced some distance from the lower edge of the device in the receptacle 15-and the spring and gear traink made of `such size as to be accommodated construction, but that j withinl the space beneath the bottom, and
within the receptacle as shown in Fig. 5.
While the device is described as formed of sheet metal, the joints being soldered,` of course it is withinl the scope of the invention if the parts are formed with any other masecuredtogether by any other means than that mentioned. The device may be constructed of Celluloid, which maybe found preferable. Y
What is claimed:
LA pin dispensing devicecomprising a casing having a reeling-fand an unreeling chamber and a connecting passage having a finger receiving opening at its upper side extending downwardly adistance, vertically spaced check elements fixed lin the casing beneath said opening, 'means to carry a roll paper of pins in the unreeling chamber, a drum inA the reeling chamber for winding pin papergfrom the unreeling chamber, and means constantly tending to rotate the drum, whereby the outermost pin will be held against said check elementswith a portion projecting through said opening.
2.*A device ofthe class describedcomprising a base element, a casing thereon, comprising a single strip of sheet metal bent to form two circular loop portions comprising receptacles,and parallel connecting portions forming -a passage communicating with the receptacles, said parallel portions being provided with intermediate alined notches at their upper edges, closure-means for the upper sidesl of the receptacle, means for supporting a rll of pins to be unwound in one receptacle, means for reeling a pin carryingy ribbon from the other receptacle, and means for` checking the outermost pin of a roll being unwound in alinement with the notches.
3. A pin dispensing device comprising a casing having a reeling and an unreeling chamber and a connecting passage having a nger receiving opening at its upper side extending downwardly a distance, yertically spaced t check elements fixed in the casing beneath said opening, means to carry a roll paper of pins in the unreeling chamber, a drum in the reeling chamber for reeling the pin carrying element from the unreeling chamber, and means to rotate the drum.
