GARBAGE-CAN.
Specification or Letters Patent.
Application fiieaaune s, 1914.- Seria1No.8f15,262.j
I can body near the bottom thereof and is normally positively held in substantial airtight sealing engagement with the can in order to prevent or minimize decomposition of the contents of the can,'and to prevent the escape of the odors of the garbage.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved organization of the character stated wherein the can may be readily manipulated to discharge its contents and in such discharging manipulation of the can the cover is released and assumes an open or partly open position, and wherein the cover may be readily opened when ever desired to provide for the deposit of garbage in the can and may be closed and positively locked in closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a. can of the character stated which shall be extremely simple and inexpensive in its structural nature and which withal shall be strong and durable and not liable to derangement by reason of the ordinarily rough or careless usage to which these cans are subjected.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a garbage can in which the features of the invention are incorporated; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof partly in section.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views.
lThe can body as 1. is preferably of cylindrical contour and is normally closed by a cover 2 which has a circumferential flange 3 to surround the upper end of said can when the cover is closed. The can is carried from place to place by means of a bail 5,the legs of which are pivoted at their lower ends near the bottom of the can as at 6. The
cover 2 is carried by and movable relatively to the bail 5, the connections between said isRAEfh, 0E

cover and ball comprising pins 7 provided at diametrically oppositepoints of the cover and slots 8 formed in the side bars of the bail and in which the pins 7 work. The side bars'of' the bail are provided withpivotally mounted leaf springs 9 having openings 10 near their free ends through which the pins 7 project when the cover is closedu The function of these springs is to positively lock the cover in closed position and they may be readily manipulated to release the cover when the canis to; be filled or discharged; a
.The can body 1 is provided midway between thelegs of the bail 5 and near its lower end with a handle 11 by means ofwhich' said can body may be'tilted when the garbage is tobe discharged.
The normal relation of the parts is shown in Fig. 1 and by reference to. this figure it will be observed that-th'ebailxt') has an uprightposition, that the pins 7 are at the 7 lower ends of the slots 8, and are engaged in the openings 10 of the springs 9. The cover2 thus closes the upper end of the can in a substantially air-tight manner and is positively held in closed position- To discharge the contents of the can the springs 9 are disengaged from the pins 7 and are swung to one side and thecover lifted from the can. Thereupon the can is elevatedtoa point over the/mouth of the receptacle into which the garbage is to be discharged, the bail and the handle of the cover being grasped by one hand and the handle 11 by the other, after which the can is tilted relatively to the bail to discharge its contents. After the contents of the can have been discharged in thismanner, the can body is restored to upright position between the legs of the bail and the cover is dropped or forced downwardly upon the can body afj ward movement carries with it the cover..
When the cover 2 has been moved rearwardly to a sufiicient extent to permit the. A
' deposit of garbage into the can, the bail is restored to its normal position and the cover body, a bail having its legs pivoted at their lower ends at opposite sides ofrsaid body,
the pivots being located at fixed points of said legs andof said body, a can cover having a flange to seal the upper end of said body, the bail having longitudinal slots in its legs, pins fixed on said cover for engagement in said slots, andfleaf-springsmounted on theside bars of the bail and having apertures through which said pins project in the closed position of the cover.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
