To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, JOHN W. Es'rnnmnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Mounting fo'r Lamp-Reflectors, of which the following a specification.
It is the object of j y invention to provide a headlight construc' ion wherein a glass reflector may be held safelyq-and firmly by its periphery; and whereby thesame lamping means which is used for clampin the reflector in place is also used to hold a projecting flexible strip which cooperates w1th the main casing and a swinging door to provide a tight joint when the door is closed.
In carrying out my invention, 1 provide a main headlight casing with an inwardly projecting flange shaped to fit against the back of the glass reflector, preferably near its portion of greatest diameter, place a strip of yielding material, such as felt, between this flange and the glass reflector which is placed against it, and clamp the reflector against this felt by a clamping plate which is removably fastened to the flange and which bears rearwardly against the reflector, preferably on a forwardly tapering exterior surface just forward of such portion of greatest diameter, this clamping plate being shaped to fit such tapering surface; and I mount between the clamping plate and the flange another strip of flexible material, such as felt, which projects outwardly slightly beyond the casing so as to be engaged by a swinging door which telescopes over such casing, thereby forming a tight joint.
The single figure of the accompanying drawing illustrates my invention.
The headlight casing 10 is conveniently of the form shown, with an enlarged front portion and a smaller rear portion. Within this casing is locatedthe glass reflector 11,
at the focus of which is mounted the source of illumination 12, such as an incandescent lamp, which is carried by a socket 113 located in the axis of and behind the reflector 11.-' At its front edge, the casing 10 is pro vided with an inwardly projecting flange 15, the inner portion of which is formed as a tapering seat 16 which is shaped to correspond substantially to the rear of the re flector 11 just back of the edge 17 thereof.

This edgeor portion of greater diameter 17 is not quite at the front plane of the reflector, and the outer surface 18 of the re flector tapers forwardly from the edge 17 to such front plane. A clamping plate 19 is removably fastened by screws 20 to the flange 15, and has an inner seat portion 21 which is tapered to -fit against the tapering surface 18 of the reflector 11. A layer of felt or other suitable yielding material 22 is placed between the seat portion 16 of the flange 15 and the cooperating rear wall of the reflector 11, so that when the screws 20 are tightened the seat portion 21 acts on the tapering surface 18 and forces the reflector 11 to the rear against the felt 22, which is compressed between the rear wall of the reflector and such seat portion 16.
A strip of felt 25 is placed between the clamping plate 19 and the flange l6, and projects outward therefrom. Conveniently this strip of felt is separate'from the strip of felt 22, though not necessarily so. The outwardly projecting portion of the strip of felt 25 extends beyond the adjacent portion 26 of the frame 10, so as to be engaged by the tubular portion 27 of the door 28, which tubular portion 27 telescopes over the portion 26 of the frame 10. The door 28 has a hinge connection 29 to the frame 10 at one side, and at the other side is provided with any suitable latching device 30. This door 28 carries the usual glass dish 81, through which the forwardly projected light waves from the reflector pass. When the door 28 is swung shut, the telescoping portion 27 thereof compresses the projecting portion of the felt 25, and forms a tight joint.
I claim as my invention:
1. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the inner portion of which is tapered to form a seat, a glass reflector which has a portion of greatest diameter and tapers forwardly and rearwardly from such edge, said rearwardly tapering portion substantially fitting in said seat, a layer of yielding material between said seat and said reflector, and a clamping plate which bears against the forwardly tapering portion of said reflector in front of such portion of greatest diameter to clamp the reflector against said layer of yielding material and said seat.
2. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the inner portion of which is tapered to form a seat, a glass reflector which has a portion of greatest diameter and tapers rearwardly from suchedge, said rearwardly tapering portion substantially fitting in said seat, a layer of yielding material'between said seat and said reflector, and a clamping plate which bears against said reflector in front of such portion of greatest diameter to clamp the reflector against said layer of yielding material and said seat.
3. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the inner portion of which is tapered to form a seat, a glass reflector which .has a portion of greatest diameter and tapers forwardly. andiarwardly from such edge, said rearwardly tapering portion substantially fittingin said seat, a layer of yielding material between said seat and said reflector, a clamping plate which bears against the forwardly tapering portion of said reflector in front of such portion of greatest diame ter to clamp the reflector against said layer of yielding material'and said seat, a layer of yielding material clamped between said clamping plate and said flange and projecting outwardly, and a door which telescopes over the front of the casing and compresses said projecting yielding material to form a tightjoint.

A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the inner portion of which is'tapered to form a seat, a glass reflector which has a portion ofgreatest diameter and tapers rearwardly from'such edge, said rearwardly tapering portion substantially fitting in said seat a layer of yielding material between'said seat and said reflector, a clamping plate which bears against said reflector in front of such portion of greatest diameter to clamp the reflector against said layer of yielding material and said seat, a layer of yielding material clamped between said clamping plate and said flange 'and projecting outwardly, and a door which telescopes over the front of the casing and compresses said projecting yielding material to form a tight joint.
. 5. A-lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange at the front, a clamping plate cooperating with said flange, a reflector which is clamped at its edge between said flange and said clamping plate, a layer of yielding material clamped between said clamping plate and meagre flange and projecting outwardly, and a door telescoping over said clamping plate and casing and engaging said projecting yield ing material to form a tight j oint.
6. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange at the front, a clamping plate cooperating with said flange, a reflector which is clamped at its edge between said flange and said clamping plate, a layer of yielding material between said reflector and one of the parts between which its edge is clamped, a layer of yielding material clamped between said clamping plate and flange and projecting outwardly, and a door telescoping over said clamping plate and casing and engaging said projecting yielding material to form a tight joint.
7. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the inner portion of which is tapered to form a seat, a reflector which has a portion of and a door which telescopes over the front of the casing and compresses said projecting yielding material to form a tight joint.
8. A lamp structure, comprising a casing having an inwardly projecting flange the greatest 'ameter andtapers rearwardly from such edge, said-rearwardly tapering portion substantially fitting in said seat, a clamping plate which bears against said reflector in front of such portion of greatest diameter to clamp the reflector against said seat, .a layer of yielding material clamped between said clamping plate and said flange ,gr'eatest diameter and tapers rearwardly inner portion 0 ich is tapered to form a seat,, a, ctor which has a portion of and projecting outwardly, and a door which telescopes over the front of the casing and compresses said projecting yielding material to form a tight joint.
