GATE.
Application filed July 27, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NEAL A. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rector, in the county of Clay and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates especially of the vertically opening t e.
ilhe object of the invention is to provide for conveniently and readily allowing of the passage of animals or cattle into, and out of an inclosure as circumstances or conditions may suggest or require.
A further object is to provide for accomodating the passage of the stock, cattle or animals, according to size and other characteristics.
A still further object to carry out these ends in a simple, expeditious and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as relates to the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, the figure is a perspective view of the same.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a gate 1 preferably of the general construc tion as disclosed, the same including a plurality of longitudinal suitably spaced-apart slats or rails 1 spaced-apart vertical end bars or stiles 1 and opposed diagonal braces 1 extending from, and between the upper forward end and lower rear end of the gate, all these parts being suitably secured together. Said gate has the lower ends of its rear end bars suitably pivoted in position by means of a pintle or pin 2 inserted there through and through opposed spaced-apart stake or stub like members 3 which, for stability or firmness, are suitably embedded. or anchored in a concrete-base 1. By thus pivoting or disposing the gate in position, it is apparent that it may be elevated and lowered endwise from a lower rear end corner, in effecting the opening and closing operation for the passage of larger animals as cattle, horses, etc, into, and out of the in- Specification of Letters Patent.

closure, as doubtless will be appreciated, the means for actuating the gate being described later.
The gate 1 is provided with a suitable latch member or bar 5 which is automatically held in projected or effective position for suitable engagement with a notch or mortise 5 produced in the forward end post 2, by means of a spring 6 preferably of the helical or coiled type, with its ends suitably secured to the latch member and one brace 1, respectively. The latch member 5 is adapted to fit snugly between certain of the rails, or between apair of rails, and passes snugly between the braces and the pair of stiles at the free end of the gate.
Levers 7 suitably equipped with depending means, as lines or wires 8, for their convenient manipulation, are suitably fulcrumed in the upper ends of posts or uprights 9, suitably planted or secured in position, at the sides of the gate or closure, the inner ends of said levers being connected by wires or links 10 to the upper ends of supplemental levers or links 11 pivoted to rail directly below the latch. The levers or bars 11 are arranged contiguous to, and adapted to engage side studs or projections 12 upon the latch-member or bar 5 whereby, by suitably actuating either lever 7 from its manually engaged member or wire 8, said latchmember or bar may be moved into retracted position for its disengagement from the for ward end gate post and the gate, by the same operation, be elevated to open position.
'At its rear end, the gate is equipped with an offset resilient member 13, with its free or offset portion terminating near the upper edge of the gate, to serve as a cushion, to overcome concussions as the lower end of the gate approaches or contacts with the ground, in effecting the opening of the gate, thus preventing the wrecking of the same as would be liable to occur by continued like manipulation of this character.
It will be further noted that the weight of the outer arms of the gate actuating levers is such as to normally swing the links 11 toward the pivoted end of the gate.
The gate or closure 1 is itself provided with a closure or gate 14 serving practically as a wicket-gate or closure, the same occupying an opening suitably provided in the gate 1 and hung within the latter from an upright transverse bar-member 15, suitably secured to the primary gate. This arrangement provides for the suitable passage into, and out of the inclosure of small animals such as small hogs, sheep, etc, without allowing the passage of the larger animals such as cattle, horses, etc, at the same time.
The gate actuating lever supports or uprights 9 are suitably connected to the forward end post 2 by diagonal braces 9. The spring 6 serves to pull or force the latch outwardly, so that the projections 12 are engaged with or moved toward the levers or links 11 when the latch is free. This is of advantage, when the gate is partially raised, for the reason that the projections 12 will be brought into engagement with the links 11 so that the force applied to the outer arms of the levers 7 will act against the tension of the spring to yieldingly support the gate. Also it is observed that it is thought that the ady antages and benefits of my invention as above disclosed taken in connection with the accompanyin illustration or drawing have been fully brought out, it being possibly necessary to emphasize the fact of its extreme simplicity, the same embracing but few parts and is accordingly inexpensive of manufacture, is capable of easy construction and is readily applied for use, while it may be actuated or opened and closed from horse back, thus obviating dismounting and remounting for that purpose.
What is claimed is In a device of the character described, a gate having the lower corner of one end pivoted to permit the gate to swing vertiswin rearwardlv therea 'ainst astrikin post adjacent which the free end of the gate is adapted to move when the gate is lowered and having a keeper for the reception of the forward end of the latch, upright posts mounted at the sides of the pivoted end of the gate, actuating levers fulcrumed upon the last mentioned posts, members connect ing the levers and free ends of the links, a relatively long coiled wire spring attached to the latch in advance of the links and attached to the gate, so as to tend to project the latch and to-move the said projections against the links, all of said posts projecting above the gate when it is in closed position, and diagonal braces connecting the upper ends of the second mentioned posts with the upper end of the striking post.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of-two witnesses.
