To all whom it may 0mm.-
Be it known that I. Orro Pn'rnmmxx, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of Groton. county of Tompkins, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Locks for Type-\Yriting Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates more particularly to locking means adapted for use in connection with foldable and visible writing machines such as shown in the patent to Frank S. Rose, No. 918,553. dated Feb. 8, 1910.
In machines of the type set forth in the Rose patent referred to, the carriage is mounted to travel along a bed. .This bed is held upon arms, bars or members which are pivoted to other bars or arms located on opposite sides of the machine and form a part of a foldable support to adapt the carriage bed and mechanism mounted thereon to be folded forward over the keyboard in order that the machine may occupy less space than when in use and to permit the machine to be readily transported or for other purposes. Insuch machines the carriage and platenare shifted vertically by key-operated mechanism to adapt the type heads to have a plurality of characters thereon. If a sudden platen shift. movement is given, the carriage and platen may move beyond the point intended and a type caused to print before the carriage can return by gravity, and where the machine is used while traveling in vehicles, as railroad trains, having constant vlbratlon, the carriage often vibrates vertically independent of any shiftmachine should, for any reason, be inverted While handling the same.
The primary object of the invention is to overcome the objectionable features referred to, and to provide simple means which may I be mounted upon the machine and so arranged that the foldable part ofthecarriage support may be heldagamst movement unless said means is released, thus retaining It is desirthe carriage and the foldable part of the support against independent movement until t is desired that such parts be moved from a normal working position into compact relation to another part of the machine.

A further object of the. invention is'to provide means which may be variously op-' erated and located, and which is simple in construction and may be readily applied .invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the acco1n panying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and will then bepointed out in the claims at the end of the d'escription. In the drawings, Figure 1 is afragmentary vertical section of the rear part of a machine, showing one embodiment of the invention applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view under the carriage 'bed, taken on the line II-II of Fig.1.
The frame 10 may have side frame members 11 and a rear. frame plate12'made of sheet metal or otherwise. Apost'or guide 13 may be located at each rear corner of the machine frame and adapted to move vertically in each post and be guided therein is a slide or shift rod 14. These rods 14 may be connected together by a transversely extending rod 15 at their lower ends, and held to the rod 15 isthe arm 16 of a platen shift lever 17. transversely extendingrod 18 serving as a pivot therefor so that when said shift lever is moved by depressing the key portion,

This carriage has a platen mounted thereon against which the type are adapted to strike during the printing operation, and under the carriage bed and support 21 may extend a protecting plate 26. As will be evident, the arriage. carriage bed and platen. may be shifted or .moved forward with the arms "21 by reason of their pivotal connection at with the arms 1.9,
, and in such a way that the platen and car riage will overhang the keyboard or be otherwise placed in compact relation to another part of the machine. The parts as thus described are substantially the same as disclosed in the patent hereinbefore referred to and may be of any suitable construction.
A device 27 is pivoted at 28 and has a tooth or projecting part forming a catch which isadapted to engage under a tooth or projecting part 30 formed on the rear end of the bar or support member 19. This device 27 has its pivot '28 so positioned with relation to the tooth 29 that when moved on its pivot. the .said tooth will be disconnected from the tooth 30 to permit the members 21 and carriage to be folded forward, it being understood that the device may be located. on one side ofthe machine 01' on both sides of the machine as preferred. The de vice 27 has its body portion extending rearwardly and on the end thereof is provided with a fin'gerpart- 31 by which the device may be movedon its pivot or the said device may be otherwise operated. The device "is provided with a lug or projection 32, on the upper edge thereof which is engaged by a spring 38, the upper end of which fits about a lug or projection 34 located under the carriage bed and which serves to hold-the spring in position. This spring 34 normally forces with the tooth 30 when the carriage is in its normal working position, The device has a curved or recessed portion at 35 which is adapted to engage a stop 36 to limit the downward movement of said device. stop is in the form of a-scre-w so that the head thereof will serve to guide the device in either its upward or downward move-' ment. From the foregoing, it will be seen that very simple and efiicient means is provided which may he variously constructed and adapted in such a way as to prevent relative shifting movement between the parts of the carriage support; and that said means readily accessible to permit the folding of the support and so constructed as to be automatic in this action to hold the members of the support against folding move: ment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 2- 1. In a t vpewriting machine, the combination of a bed, a carriage adapted to travel along said bed, a support for the carriage and bed comprising foldable men'ibers, one of which has a tootl a device pivotally held to another member and having a tooth adapted to engage thefirst-mentioned tooth, said device having a finger portion. a guide and stop to limit the movement of the device in one direction, and a spring int-en posed between the carriage bedand the device and normally forcing the device into engaging position.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combi' nation of a bed, a carriage adapted to travel along said bed. a support for the carriage and bed comprising foldable members, one of which has a tooth, a device pivotally held to another member and having a tooth adapted to engage the first-mentioned tooth, said device having a finger portion, and a spring interposed between the carriage bed and the device and normally forcing the device into engaging position.
In a typewriting machine, the combination of a bed, a carriage adapted to travel along said bed, a support for the carriage and bed comprising bar-like foldahle members' pivotally held together. one of which has a tooth at one-end, a device pivotally held to another member and having a tooth at one end adapted to engage the first-mentioned tooth, sald device having a finger portion, guide and stop to linntthemove ment of the device in one direction, and a spring interposed between the carriage bed and the device and normally forcing the device into engaging position.

5. In a typewriting machine, the coinbination of a support having pivoted bar-like parts foldable relatively with respect to eachother, a carriage mounted on said support, a tooth located at the end of one of the nonfolding parts of said support, means for shifting said support vertically, and a piv otally held device carried by a folding part of said support and adapted to engage said tooth when in normal Working position and prevent any folding movement.
