Be it known that I, LEIGH G. HURD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Poultry Drinking- Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a poultry drinking-fountain.
t is the object of this invention to provide a drinking-fountain of the vacuum and trap type in whic a volume of liquid is fed from a container into a trough and maintained at a fixed level n the trough, and to so construct the container and the trough that the latter will serve as a hinged closure for the open end of the container. Another object is to provide means for hinging the closure trough to the container with means for latching it in its closed position to prevent displacement thereof on inversion of the container. 'A further object is to provide adjustable means on the 'container serving as a guard to prevent chicks from getting into the trough and which may be disposed in various positions in relation to the trough 'according to the size of the chicks to be served by the fountain, and which also operates 'to prevent droppings from falling into and Y contaminating the water in the trough.
The invention primarily resides in a container having one end-closed and the other open, fitted with a closure on its open end having a marginal flange adapted to extend exteriorly of the Wall of the container in spaced relation thereto, which closure is adapted on inversion of the container to form a scat for the latter and provide a drinking trough throughout the circumference of the container; an adjustable guard or hood being mounted'on the container to extend over the trough. j

The open end of' the container 7 is 'adapted to be closed by means of a cover-plate 11 here shown as circular and of a diameter greater than that of the container 7. Formed on theI marginal edge of the plate 11 is an annular flange 12, which is adapted to extend parallel with the wall of the container 7 in spaced relation thereto when the cover-plate is in its closed position` as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to forma continuous trough intermediate the walls of the container 7 and the flange 12.
Mounted on the outer face of the conta'iner 7 is a bracket 13 which extendsto point adjacent the inner face of the flange 12 and is hingedly connected to the latter adjacent its edge by means of a pivot pin 14 which engages a loop 15 formed on a plate 16 4carried by the flange 12, as particu- I larly shown in Fig. 3. The pivotal connection between the bracket 13 and the flange 12 is such .that the cover-plate 11 will extend across the open end of the container in close contact with the edge of the container 7 when in its closed position with the Iin its inverted position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Mounted on `the cover-plate 11is a spring latch 18 which when the cover-plate is in its closed position is adapted to extend into the "lug 22 which is i! 4 and 25 being interlocked lugs 21 and 22, which are connected 'together by a. bolt 23; the bolt serving as a means to clamp the band 1S in any desired, position on the container and provide anfdjustinent by which the hood 2() may/'be disposed in any desired spaced relation to the trough. I claim:
1. A poultry driliking-fountain comprising a container having a closed end and an open end and formed with an orifice in itsI wall adjacent its open end, a cover-plate for closing the open end of the container, a hinge connecting the cover-plate to the container on the side thereofdiametrically opposite the orifice, and means on the coverplate engageable with the edge of the orifice for holding the cover-plateJ against movement on its hinge. l
2. A poultry drinking fountain, comprising a container having a closed end and an open end, and formed with an orifice in its Wall adjacent its open. end, :i cover plate for closing the open end of the container, a hinge connecting the cover plate to the container, and a spring latch on the cover plate engageable with the edge of the orifice for holding the cover plate against movement on its hinge.
