To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnonnron B. Town SEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at I-Iinsdale, in the county of Dupage and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Roller .Side Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller side bearings.
An object of the invention is to provide a roller side bearing adapted for use on railway cars and similar uses, which is composed of few parts, relatively cheap to manufacture, and so arranged that the parts may be readily assembled and dis-assembled whenever desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a roller side bearing of the type above indicated of practical construction and eflicient in operation.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of.
a roller side bearing, showing my improvements in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the improved roller side bearing. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional View taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a horizontal detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4. And Fig. 6 isa detailed perspective of one of the centering spring followers.
In said drawing, 10 denotes the base casting, the same having end flanges 11-11 by which it may be attached to the truck or body bolster of a car. As shown, the casting is provided with end walls 1212, with side walls 1313, and outer side walls 14-14. The end and inner side walls 1313 form an elongated chamber or recess in which is adapted to roll back and forth the antifriction roller 15, the latter bearing upon a hardened wear plate 16, seated in the bottom of the chamber so formed. Each pair of side walls 13 and 14 is spaced to provide a longitudinally extending recess 17 in which is adapted to reciprocate back and forth members 18. Each of the members 18 (see Fig. 6) comprises an outwardly exspaced, depending arms 20-20, an up- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly extending flange 21 and a perforated boss or hub 22. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the inner side walls 1313 extend considerably above the tops of the outer side walls 1414 and said upward extensions are each provided with an elongated slot 23, through which extends, and is adapted to reciprocate back and forth therein, a shaft, or axle 24, which is also loosely extended through the anti-friction roller 15. The shaft 24 has its ends extending through the perforated hubs 22 of the members 18 and is held therein and prevented from accidental removal by suitable means, such as the cotters 25.
At their lower edges the outer walls 14 14 are provided with curved portions 26 located opposite elongated openings 27 in the inner side walls 13-13. The curved portions 26 in conjunction with the elongated slots or recesses 27 serve to form chambers for springs 28 which, as will be understood, are inserted through said recesses 27-27 from the inside of the base casting. The springs 28 bear at their ends on shoulders 29 and 30 formed respectively on the outer walls 14 and inner walls 13. The ends of said springs are also engaged by the depending arms 20 of the members 18 so that the latter act as spring followers, and through the shaft 24 serve to maintain the anti-friction roller in normal or central position when the device is not being actuated. The bottom of each spring chamber is cut away as indicated at 31, so that dirt or other foreign matter which might collect in the spring chambers will fall through or be washed out.
From the preceding description it will be seen that the side bearing which I have provided is of relatively simple construction; the various parts may be assembled and replaced with facility even when the device is secured in position on a bolster; a wide roller and bearing therefor is obtained; the roller is always returned to normal position after each actuation; and on account of the long bearings, or contacting surfaces, between the flanges 19 of the spring followers and the upper edges of the outer walls 14, the danger of tilting, or undesirable displacement of the followers as the same are moved, is prevented.
Although I have herein shown and de scribed what I now consider the preferred embodiment of my invention, yet
aware that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construe-V tion and arrangement of parts Without departing from'the spirit of the invention.
