Description

F. L. PORTER. FLASH LIGHT CABINET. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10, 1914.
Patented Apr. 11 1916.
THE COLUMBIA PhANUGRAPl'l-QKL WASHINGTOILJL C- FREDERICK L. PORTER, Los 'ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
mass-LIGHT CABINET.
Application filed June 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,199.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flash-Light Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a flash light cabinet.
It is the object of this invention to provide a cabinet for facilitating the making of. flash light exposures in photographing interiors, and which is so constructed as to obviate the objectionable dust and smoke ordinarily resulting from the combustion of the flash light powder.
A further object is to provide a cabinet which is so constructed as to effectively trap the dust and smoke resulting from the burning of the flash light powder and prevents it from spreading in the room where the flash light is taken, and from which the smoke and dust may be readily removed after the flash light has been taken.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the flash light cabinet. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same, partly in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail 7 horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 41 is a detail inside elevation of the lower portion of the cabinet. Fig. 5 is a detail of the lower portion of the dust-collecting bag.
More specifically, 6 indicates the cabinet proper, which consists of. a bottom plate 7 having rearwardly convergent side edges to which vertical side walls 8 and 9 are attached; the side walls 8 and 9 being connected by a rear wall 10. The upper ends of the walls 8, 9 and 10 connect with a dome 11 which opens at its apex to a pipe 12; the pipe 12 being bent to return upon itself with its outer end terminating in a horizontal plane adjacent the dome 11 and having a dust bag 13 removably secured thereto by means of a cord 14.
The dust bag 13 is formed of a suitable fabric and has its lower end normally closed by a draw-string 15. The front of the cabinet is closed by a door 16 comprising frame 17 carrying a glass panel 18; the frame 17 being connected to the front vertical edge of the wall 8 by means of hinges 19 of any suitable construction. This frame Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
.17, is" held closed position b y'means of hooks 20 pivoted at 21 to the outer face of the side Wall 9 and adapted to engage eyes 1 22 on the edge of the frame 17, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The cabinet 6 is provided with suitable hand-holds 23 which are here shown as mounted on the side wall 9; a hand-hold being positioned adjacent the bottom of the cabinet and another positioned near its top, as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom 7 of the cabinet is formed with-a central opening 24 through which the burner nozzle 25 of a suitable flash light torch 26 is adapted to extend. j
I11 the operation of the invention the cabinet is placed in the desired position in the interior to be photographed and the torch 26 is ignited in the usual manner; the flame of the torch being controlled by the usual air tube 27 connected therewith. To
make the exposure the flame of the flash llght is augmented by delivering air to the torch through the tube 27 which causes a rapid combustion of the flash light materials and results in a bright flame within the cabinet; the inner faces of the walls 8, 9, and 10 reflecting the light produced by the flame and thereby intensifying the same.
The products of combustion resulting from the burning of the flash light materials in the form of vdust and smoke rise in the cabinet and pass through the dome 11 and pipe 12 into the bag 13, thus effectively preventing the escape of the dust and smoke into the room.
By the use of this device the flame in the cabinet may be continued as long as desired to make the necessary exposure, whereupon the cabinet may be removed to the open air and the door 16 opened to permit the escape of such smoke as collects in the interior of the cabinet proper and the dust bag 18 is opened at its lower end by releasing the draw string 15 so as to remove such ashes, dust and smoke as accumulate in the bag 13, whereupon the bag 13 and the door 16 being again closed the cabinet is in readiness for another operation.
VV'hat I claim is: i
A flash light cabinet, comprising a housing of prismatic form having a hinged transparent panel formed in the front wall of the housing, a flash light torch disposed adjacent the base thereof, a dome at the upper end ofthe housing, a conduit connected to the top of said dome and having In Witness that I claim the foregoing I a return bend With the free arm substanhave hereunto subscribed my name this 19th tially vertical, and a dust collecting bag of day of May, 1914:.'
impervious material detachably secured to F. L. PORTER. the end of and freely suspended from the Witnesses: conduit and provided With an opening EDMUND A. STRAUsE,
adapted to be closed by draw strings. MARIE BATTEY.
