Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1916.
Application filed January 18, 1916. Serial No. 72,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. Pn'r'rrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Biltmore, in the county of Buncombe and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of rail joints by providing a joint that can be manufactured cheaply, can be expeditiously connected to the rails, will prevent creeping of the rails, and of such construction that the strain exerted on the rails by the passage of rolling stock thereover will be equally distributed to the different parts of the joint.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the rail joint. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the other section of the joint, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the sections associated with each other. Fig. 4: is an end view of the sections in operative position on a rail, and Fig. 5 is a section taken through the rail and through the sections of the joint.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, the numerals 1 and 2 designate, respectively, a pair of sections adapted to lie, respectively, on the opposite sides of a rail, designated A. The section 1 includes a base 3, having one end thereof provided with a lateral extension 4, and a tongue 5 having one end formed integral with the extension 4, the said tongue extending in parallel and spaced relation with the base 3, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The inner longitudinal edge of the base 3 is provided with a V shaped and longitudinally extending groove 6, and the extension 4 has its outer edge provided with a groove 7 which extends around the side and end edges of the tongue 5, as shown in Fig. 1.
The joint section 2 includes a base 8, one end of which is cutaway to provide a tongue 9 and a recess 10. The inner longitudinal edge of the base 8 of the joint section 2 is' provided with a beveled rib 11, which extends throughout the length of the inner edge and the adjacent side edge of the tongue 9 and the opposite side of the tongue 9 is provided with a similar beveled rib 12, which is continued along the'inner end wall of the recess 10 and along the adjacent edge of the base 8, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The outer longitudinal edge of the base 8 is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 13, and the outer longitudinal edge of the base 3 is provided with similar openings 14, the said openings 13 and 14 being designed to receive the fastening members 15 so as to hold the sections in position on a rail tie. hen the sections 1 and 2 are in operative position, the tongue 9 and the base 8 of the section 2 is inserted in the space between the tongue 5 and the base 3 of the section 1, and the tongue 5 on the extension 4 of section 1 is in turn inserted in the space 10 in the base 8 of the section 2, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When the sections are thus positioned, the ridges or ribs 11 and 12 engage in the adjacent respective grooves 6 and 7, and rigidly connect the sections 1 and 2 together. When the base members 3 and 8 are connected in the manner just described, they form a seat for the base of the rail A, and the said base members 3 and 8 are provided with rail-engaging flanges, designated 16 and 17 respectively, the said flanges being adapted to engage over the base flange of the rail and are provided with vertical portions adapted to engage on opposite sides of the web of the rail, and the said vertical portions have openings 18 therein registering with similar openings in the web of the rail, so as to receive fastening bolts 19.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is:
1. A rail joint comprising a pair of sections each consisting of a base having a tongue formed thereon and a recess formed therein and located adjacent the tongue, the tongue on one section being detachably re? ceived by the recess in the companion section, a lateral projection formed on the tongue of one section and the tongue of the other section having a groove therein for receiving the lateral projection on the first- ;mentioned tongue.
